Purpose Of The Position
A Product Designer is responsible for creating innovative and aesthetically pleasing furniture designs that align with market trends, customer preferences, and manufacturing capabilities. This role involves designing functional and visually appealing furniture pieces while considering materials, ergonomics, and production processes.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
Design Conceptualization:
• Generate creative and innovative furniture design concepts that meet market demands and align with the company's brand identity.
• Research and stay updated on industry trends, emerging materials, and design techniques.
Sketching and Prototyping:
• Develop detailed sketches, drawings, and 3D prototypes of furniture designs to visualize and communicate ideas.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including production heads, to refine and optimize design concepts.
Material Selection and Sourcing:
• Choose appropriate materials, finishes, and hardware for each furniture piece, considering factors such as durability, cost, and sustainability.
• Collaborate with suppliers to source materials and components that meet design specifications.
Ergonomics and Functionality:
• Ensure that furniture designs are ergonomic, functional, and user-friendly, meeting industry standards and customer needs.
• Conduct usability tests and gather feedback to refine designs for comfort and usability.
Cost Analysis:
• Work closely with the product development team to estimate manufacturing costs and assess the feasibility of designs.
• Suggest design modifications to optimize production efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
CAD Modelling and Documentation:
• Create detailed CAD (Computer-Aided Design) models and technical drawings for manufacturing purposes.
• Maintain comprehensive design documentation, including bills of materials (BOMs) and design specifications.
Quality Assurance:
• Collaborate with quality control teams to ensure that finished products meet design specifications and quality standards.
• Address design-related issues and implement necessary improvements.
Collaboration and Communication:
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including marketing, sales, and manufacturing, to ensure design concepts align with market needs and production capabilities.
• Communicate design ideas effectively through presentations and discussions.
Academic & Trades Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Industrial Design, Furniture Design, or a related field. A Master's degree may be preferred.
• Proven experience as a Furniture Product Designer, with a portfolio showcasing successful projects.
• Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks) and graphic design tools (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite).
• Strong understanding of materials, manufacturing processes, and furniture construction techniques.
• Knowledge of sustainability principles in design and materials selection.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Effective communication and collaboration skills.
• Ability to adapt to evolving design trends and technologies.
Work Experience & Skills
Total Experience: Min 3 years
Relevant Experience: Min 2 years
The role of a Product Designer in the Furniture Manufacturing Industry may require occasional travel to supplier locations, trade shows, and client meetings. This position may also involve working closely with cross-functional teams and participating in product development from concept to production.
