Job Description
If you love plants, are good with people, like to stay busy, and can readily lift 50 pounds on a regular basis, then this is the perfect job for you.
Crew members to help us at our little garden shop near Fishermen’s Terminal in Seattle.
Duties are varied and include plant care, light manufacturing, shipping, and receiving, and retail nursery service. We sell indoor and outdoor plants that need regular caring after. Our emphasis is on native, edible, and pollinator-friendly selections. You will learn about the wide range of natural and organic soil amendments we sell (dry ingredients like glacial rock dust, basalt dust, fish bone, colloidal soft rock phosphate, and many more) as you work with us to help provide our customers with the right products for their unique soils and personal needs. You will receive shipments and break down 50-pound bags of these assorted ingredients and help us re-pack them into sizes that make sense for smaller garden spaces. And you would also help with processing internet orders for these products which we ship all over the country. Duties include helping customers at the shop, as well, where we have a seasonal rotation of related products for sale.
There are so many cool things to learn and talk about. For example, you will learn about beneficial insects we carry like green lace wings and others. You will learn about mycorrhizal fungi we have for sale. You will gain knowledge about bio char. You will learn about soil.
And we make a mean pancake breakfast from time to time.
It is really a unique small shop where you will be working directly with the owner-operators. Walt and Shirley Jane are hands-on and active providing you with the tools you need to succeed. We are reasonably flexible with scheduling needs; however, Saturdays are a must. We offer an optional medical/dental/vision plan after 60 days for full time (30+ hours per week) crew.
Schedule note 1 - Base schedule is:
Tuesday to Friday 10-6
Saturdays 10-4
Schedule note 2 - While the base schedule is an 8-hour shift (or 6 hours on Saturdays), you will regularly be called on to be here before and after the shop closed to help with side work like cleaning and re-stocking.
If this sounds interesting, and you have relevant work experience, please don’t hesitate to apply. And if you know anyone interested in organic gardening and landscaping, we are looking for help with that end of the business as well.
Must have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record (expected to help run errands like dropping parcels off at the post office).
