Primary objective
Provide senior clinical leadership for inpatients with Gastrointestinal and Hepatology conditions across Royal Darwin Hospital (RDH) and
Palmerston Regional Hospital (PRH). This will encompass the assessment of acute inpatients, appropriate investigation and formulation of
a management plan. High level of leadership and management skills will be required to supervise and support a team of junior staff and
nurses to coordinate care of a large number of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and Hepatology outpatients. An exceptional
understanding of complex discharge planning and willingness to engage ambulatory care services will be required in our challenging
environment. Participation in elective endoscopy lists, on-call roster is also expected, and remote outreach may be required.

Context statement
Royal Darwin Hospital has a busy Gastroenterology unit, providing a consultation service to Medical and Surgical in-patient units, along
with case managing a large cohort of IBD and liver patients, inclusive of hepatocellular carcinoma and post-transplant patients. This
position will encompass working across all aspects of the specialty of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and is ideal for a candidate who
wishes to practice as a General Gastroenterologist, but those with a subspecialty interest may also be considered. A varied and balanced
workload can be negotiated with a successful applicant. Engagement with cultural orientation is essential for any interested applicant as
well as the ability to work well in a team and engage patients of the diverse multicultural background of the Top End of the Northern
Territory.

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provision of Fellow ward services, including supervision, teaching and support of junior medical officers (Advanced Trainee, Basic

Physician Trainee, Resident Medical Officer, Interns, medical students) as well as nursing colleagues.
2. Undertakes clinical shifts and on call duties as directed by the Head of Specialty.
3. Participation in regular elective out-patient endoscopy lists and on-call roster
4. Attendance at regular Departmental Meetings (Consultant Meeting, Mortality and Morbidity, Journal Club, Radiology Meeting).
5. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in

order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
6. Foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary leadership practices and role modelling behaviour.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. Eligible for registration with AHPRA, and either a final year Advanced Trainee in Gastroenterology and Hepatology expected to obtain

FRACP within 12 months or an Overseas Trained Physician on a recognised specialist pathway eligible for peer review/supervised
practice toward specialist recognition in Australia, with training and experience in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy and eligibility
for or working towards CCRTGE certification in Adult Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy (if relevant).

2. Highly developed patient assessment, investigation, interpretation, and management skills to provide appropriate high quality care.
3. Exceptional interpersonal, oral and written communication skills with the ability to interact positively in a cross-cultural work

environment, as a team member.
4. Detailed knowledge of community care services to facilitate safe transition to home after discharge.
5. An interest in and a commitment to improving Aboriginal health.
6. Evidence of commitment to continuing education, teaching, research and quality improvement activities.
7. An ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures.
