Job Description

Job Summary - The Exeter Technologies Group at the University of Exeter are recruiting a Graduate Materials and Manufacturing Scientist. You will support the research group with investigations into new materials and processes. In particular you will work across industrially focused projects to understand the effects of material and process interactions on high performance polymers such as PEEK. This will involve developing an understanding of the material science, thermal analysis testing, mechanical testing and material processing techniques such as extrusion and additive manufacturing. In addition to learning a wide breadth of testing and analytical techniques there is likely to be the opportunity to develop some basic computer modelling skills and project management techniques, as well as supporting the group with more general group tasks, such as marketing or industrial engagement activities. You should come from an engineering or science background, with an interest in materials and/or manufacturing. Any prior knowledge of thermal characterisation, or material testing, is beneficial but not essential. This role is part of the Graduate Business Partnership (GBP) scheme and offers full time hours (36.5) for 6 months from April 2026. You will be based on Streatham Campus in Exeter. For more information on the GBP scheme, please visit www.exeter.ac.uk/internships.

About You – You should be a graduate who has a degree in a relevant engineering or science discipline and has an analytical mindset, a mix of practical and academic skills (able to adapt from learning a manufacturing process and operation to in-depth computer modelling or statistical analysis), good presentation skills, good interpersonal skills, and good MS office Knowledge. You should be trustworthy and reliable, be a good team member but also proactive and able to work independently when needed, have a flexible approach and be a quick learner, and be focussed and dedicated. Knowledge and experience of material characterisation and testing, of Python and of polymer processing (eg. Extrusion, Additive Manufacturing, Compression Moulding) are all desirable but not essential.

The Benefits to You - You will have access to a wide range of benefits, rewards and recognition from the University, including a generous pension, a holiday allowance of 3+ days per year, Totum Card (student discount) and Salary Exchange Schemes (such as the Cycle to Work Scheme, and discounted membership to the university's sports facilities). The University offers extensive support to staff, including a structured Professional Development Review and Wellbeing Service plus 1:1 support from the Internships Team. You will be offered a ‘How to Make the Most of Your Internship’ guide, bespoke mentoring, and career consultancy opportunities.
