We use nuanced understanding of digital communication to aid government agencies, publishers, journals, and academic societies with the repurposing and marketing of traditionally published scientific content to both niche and lay audiences.
As a Scientific Graphic Designer, your role will be to create specialized scientific graphical abstracts, medical illustrations, and scientific infographics. This will entail reading and interpreting complex research manuscripts and translating scientific studies into visually compelling graphical representations. Additionally, you will need to understand client briefs, instructions, and preferences and craft storyboards and rough sketches to convey the visual narrative of research studies that align with the client’s brief.
Responsibilities
• Develop visually engaging graphical abstracts that succinctly represent the essence of a scientific study.
• Read and comprehend scientific manuscripts to extract key visual elements and concepts.
• Develop storyboards that outline the visual narrative, ensuring alignment with the scientific content and client objectives.
• Generate rough sketches to illustrate the initial visual concepts, collaborating closely with researchers, writers, and clients to refine and finalize the visual representation.
• Reviewing your peers and freelancers’ outputs to ensure they meet client expectations and are delivery-ready.
Qualifications And Prerequisites
Eligibility criteria
• Graduate/PhD degree in STEM fields (especially Biology/Biotechnology/Medicine/Chemistry/Physics/Engineering)
• 5-6 years of experience in scientific graphic designing, communicating science and complex research into visually engaging output.
• Advanced skills in Adobe Design Suite (Illustrator and Photoshop). Creating 3D designs in Blender is an added advantage.
Technical skills:
• Experience in scientific graphic designing, medical illustrations, journal cover designs, and graphical abstract.
• Basic scientific knowledge and aptitude towards science communication.
• An understanding of the scientific publishing & science communication landscape.
• Advanced skills in Adobe Design Suite (Illustrator and Photoshop).
Communication skills:
• Good written/verbal English-language skills.
• Ability to communicate effectively with scientific content experts.
• Ability to collaborate with stakeholder teams on-the-job (e.g. content team) to ensure smooth execution.
• Ability to review your peers and freelancers’ output and provide timely and constructive feedback.
Organization skills:
• Ability to work with autonomy, manage time, prioritize tasks, and coordinate to deliver as per project requirements.
• Ability to meet tight deadlines and multi-task.
Customer focus:
• Strong customer focus and ability to think from a customer’s perspective when working on deliverables, identifying solutions, or implementing quality measures.
