Duties
Spawning Fall Chinook - Credit: Shawn Collins
Our Hatchery Monitoring and Evaluation Technicians will,
Collect biological data from fall Chinook and coho recovered at Priest Rapids and Ringold Springs Hatcheries and participates in salmon carcass surveys in the Hanford Reach of the Columbia River:
• Employ standard sampling techniques, tools, and forms while sampling adult salmonids recovered at hatcheries or perform stream surveys for demographic data, otoliths, and coded-wire tags (CWT).
Extract and decode coded-wire tags (CWT):
• Scan fish for presence or absence of a coded-wire tag (CWT), record demographic data, and remove and decode tag.
Data entry and proofing:
• Enter sampling data into the project's Access data base.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
• Work Setting, including hazards:
• Majority of the duties will occur indoors/outdoors at hatchery sites and occasionally along river shorelines accessed by either vehicle or boat.
• Fieldwork may include working in remote areas with limited access to facilities, inclement weather, using knives or hacksaws, navigating unstable surfaces, and potential for insect bites and stings.
• Will pick up and carry up to approximately 1,000 individual salmon weighing up to 40 pounds during an 8-hour work period.
• Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.
• Schedule:
• Typically, 8 - 12 hours per day - may have to work up to 7 days per week.
• Travel Requirements:
• Will travel to remote work sites in agency owned vehicles.
• Tools and Equipment:
• Rain gear, waders, protective gloves, standard sampling tools.
• Customer Interactions:
• Limited interaction with the public except when interviewing anglers for harvest surveys.
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Graduation from high school or GED, including one (1) year of high school science AND two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1.
OR
• Graduation from high school or GED including one (1) year of high school science AND two (2) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.
Please Note:
• College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural science classes.
• Professional and volunteer experience involving biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural resources, engineering, or closely allied fields may substitute, year for year, for experience.
Certifications/Licenses:
• Valid Driver's License.
Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:
• Successful completion of agency training and/or certification for assigned watercraft is dependent on supervisory direction, position need and training availability.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience:
• Handling adult salmonids.
• Performing carcass surveys.
• Performing redd surveys.
• Decoding coded wire tags (CWT).
• Collecting physical and biological sampling data from salmon.
• Working with relational databases.
