Key Relationships

The Heads of Boys’ Boarding reports to the Director of Boarding.
This position works closely with the Principal, Teaching staff,
Boarding and Health Centre Staff, Wellbeing Staff, the School
Counsellors, the School Chaplain, the boarding students, their
parents and communities. The Head of Boys’ Boarding has people
management responsibility for the Boys’ Boarding House staff.


Position Objective:
The Head of Boys’ Boarding is a senior pastoral and administrative position within Westminster School.
Reporting to the Director of Boarding, this position is responsible for the efficient running and
management of the Boys’ Boarding program. In particular, the Head of Boys’ Boarding is responsible
for the pastoral and boarding progress of the students under their care.

Key Responsibilities:


1. Enable and support boy boarders to thrive within the boarding program

Assist the Director of Boarding in maintaining boarder safety, wellbeing, and development through strong
relationships and proactive programmes.

Oversee boy boarders' wellbeing, behaviour, discipline, and morale.
Manage disciplinary issues with the Director of Boarding in accordance with school policies.
Ensure boarder participation in co-curricular activities.
Coordinate with boarding, teaching, wellbeing and the Health Centre staff regarding individual student
and medical needs.

Assist the Director of Boarding in selecting student leaders.
Encourage student responsibility through leadership and service opportunities.
Keep thorough student records and update central files as required.
Attend key school events to support students.
Supervise student leave and holiday arrangements.
Organise room assignments in accordance with school processes.


2. Provide effective, efficient management of Boys’ Boarding facilities, services and program

Oversee daily management and upkeep of the Boys’ Boarding House.
Coordinate with the Director of Boarding to align policies and practices across Boys’ and Girls’ Boarding.
Ensure WHS compliance, including evacuation and lock down drills.
Submit maintenance and minor work requests.
Communicate and coordinate with cleaning and catering contractors.
Assist the Director of Boarding in preparing development proposals and budget requests.
Manage staffing and services within the boarding budget.


3. Lead and manage staff in Boys’ Boarding

Arrange staff duty rosters in accordance with boarding policies.
Ensure staff have appropriate qualifications and arrange Professional Development where necessary in
consultation with the Director of Boarding.

Assist the Director of Boarding with appointments to boarding staff.
Promote teamwork, consistency and good morale amongst boarding staff in their respective area.
Meet regularly with boarding staff to promote a cooperative and collaborative team approach.

4. Foster strong relationships with Boarder parents and communities

Build positive relationships with parents by welcoming them to school and boarding events.
Regularly respond to and update parents about their children's needs.
Serve as the main contact for boarding parents regarding their children's progress.
Meet with parents at term start/end, exeats, and boarding functions.
Prepare communications to boarding parents with support from the Director of Boarding.
Work with the Boarders Parent’s Association on meetings and social activities.
Promote the Westminster Boarding Program alongside the Enrolments Manager.
Help organize major boarding events, including orientation and dinners.

5. Other Responsibilities

Continuously improve all aspects of Boarding services and programs in conjunction with the Director of
Boarding, attending regular meetings as required.
Attend Pastoral Committee, and School Leadership Team meetings as requested.
Remain abreast of all boarding issues through appropriate professional memberships, conference
attendance and school visits.
Be available for any matters which might require immediate attention during term time.
Maintain, or ensure the maintenance, of appropriate records.
Contribute to School Improvement initiatives.
Model the School’s values and expected behaviours, including compliance with School policies.
Other responsibilities as required by the Principal from time to time.

Key Selection Criteria: Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Tertiary qualifications in Teaching.
• Proven ability to manage staff, ie rostering, recruiting, performance development and management.
• Excellent planning, organisational and time management skills.
• Demonstrated experience in managing a budget.
• High level of administration skills.
• Sound understanding of Work, Health and Safety requirements as they pertain to a boarding
environment.
• Current First Aid Certificate (Provide First Aid).
• Previous experience in a leadership position within a boarding house, residential care facility or similar

will be highly regarded.
• Knowledge of legislative requirements regarding medical care of students is desirable.


Key Selection Criteria: Personal Qualities

Demonstrated ability to deliver effective pastoral care to students/boarders in years 7-12, particularly
boys.
Well-developed ability to communicate and liaise effectively with students, parents, school staff and
other community and agency members.
Demonstrated ability to build positive and effective working relationships.
• Has a nurturing, warm and friendly disposition, is approachable and personable.
• Displays patience, compassion and flexibility.

Safety and Wellbeing
All staff must:

Take reasonable care of, and cooperate with actions taken to protect, the health and safety of both
themselves and others.
Report all accidents, incidents and hazards to their supervisors as soon as is practicable.
Read and abide by all WHS policies.

Conditions of Employment

All applicants must be eligible to work in Australia.
• All staff must satisfy child protection screening and adhere to Westminster’s Child Safety and Wellbeing
policy which includes holding a current Working With Children Clearance.
• All teaching staff must have completed current First Aid training.

A probationary period applies for new employees.
