Job Description
Benmax is seeking an experienced and strategic Head of Health, Safety, Environment and Quality (HSEQ) to lead and embed best‑practice HSEQ systems across our operations. This is a senior leadership role with responsibility for shaping strategy, driving culture, and ensuring robust governance and compliance across multiple sites and projects.
Reporting directly to the Managing Director, you will be a trusted advisor to the Executive Leadership Team and the Board, providing assurance that HSEQ risks are effectively managed and that the business meets its legislative, contractual, ethical and governance obligations.
About the role:
As Head of HSEQ, you will provide enterprise‑wide leadership across Work Health & Safety, Environmental Management and Quality, ensuring our certified management systems are effective, practical and continuously improving. You will influence leaders at all levels, build strong capability within the HSEQ team, and play a critical role in strengthening Benmax’s safety‑first culture. The role operates across both office and site environments and involves local and interstate travel as required.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Strategy
You will lead the development and ongoing improvement of Benmax’s HSEQ strategy, policies and governance framework, ensuring they are practical, effective and aligned with business objectives. As a senior leader, you will provide trusted HSEQ advice, reporting and assurance to the Executive Leadership Team and Board, while actively driving a strong, proactive safety, quality and environmental culture across the business.
You will also oversee HSEQ performance metrics, dashboards and reporting frameworks to ensure clear visibility of risks, trends and outcomes.
Work Health & Safety
You will have ownership of the Work Health & Safety Management System, ensuring compliance with ISO 45001 and Australian WHS legislation. This includes supporting officer due diligence obligations under the WHS Act and leading enterprise‑wide risk management, hazard identification, critical risk controls and health monitoring programs.
You will govern incident reporting and investigations, ensure effective corrective actions, and oversee contractor and subcontractor WHS systems and performance across the business.
Environmental Management
You will lead the Environmental Management System, ensuring compliance with ISO 14001, EPA and regulatory requirements. This role is responsible for overseeing environmental risk assessments, controls and monitoring, managing environmental incidents, and engaging with regulators as required.
A key focus of the role is driving continuous improvement in environmental performance and supporting sustainability initiatives across the business.
Quality Management
You will own and maintain the Quality Management System in line with ISO 9001, Australian Standards and contractual requirements. This includes oversight of audits, non‑conformance management and continuous improvement initiatives, as well as ensuring quality assurance across design, procurement, construction and manufacturing activities.
Audits, Assurance & Compliance
You will develop and manage internal audit programs and lead external certification, client and regulator audits. Ensuring timely closeout of audit findings and non‑conformances is critical, along with providing clear assurance reporting to executive leadership and the Board.
People & Capability
You will lead, mentor and develop a high‑performing HSEQ team, building capability across the business. This includes establishing training and competency frameworks for staff, managers and executives, and supporting safety leadership and workforce engagement initiatives.
What you’ll bring:
Tertiary qualifications in WHS, HSEQ or a related discipline
10+ years’ experience in senior HSEQ leadership roles within construction, manufacturing, mining or heavy industry
Strong knowledge of Australian WHS and environmental legislation
Proven experience managing ISO 45001, ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 certified systems
