The role
The Head of Legal – Customer is a key technical, strategic and people leader within the Group Legal Division.

Reporting directly to the General Counsel - Insurance Australia, this role requires the ability to respond to urgent legal matters, provide real-time guidance to senior stakeholders, maintain oversight of the complex insurance legal landscape, and deliver strategic impact.

You will be expected to form close relationships with all of the members of the Auto & General Senior Leadership Team and you will be the “business partner” for our Product and Claims divisions. You will also be required to instruct and oversee the engagement of external legal and consulting firms, and engage with external regulatory bodies as required.

Position accountabilities

Team Leadership: Leading 5-7 direct reports, including a mix of Senior Corporate Lawyers, Corporate Lawyers and Paralegals, with continuous day-to-day availability for escalation, supervision, coaching, performance management and professional development

Stakeholder Management: Building and maintaining strong, trusted adviser relationships with key internal stakeholders (including the Director Claims and Assessing, Chief Product Officer, and Director Customer and Data) and external stakeholders
Technical Expertise: Maintaining deep and broad corporate and commercial legal knowledge across all areas relevant to Product, Claims and Data operations
Strategic Prioritisation: Prioritising the team's workload based on business objectives, strategic priorities, and risk assessment
Complex Advisory: Exercising significant independent judgement in advising on complex, high value matters and applying legal obligations to key projects and strategic initiatives

What experience will you bring

10+ years of post-qualification legal experience, with significant experience in insurance, financial services, or regulated industries
Proven experience in a senior legal leadership role managing both BAU and complex regulatory/project workloads
Deep understanding of Australian corporate law, corporate governance and financial services regulation
Strong commercial acumen and stakeholder engagement skills
Admission to practice as a solicitor in an Australian jurisdiction
Excellent analytical, problem- solving and decision-making skills
Strong leadership and engagement skills, with the ability to manage SME experts
Strong communication, influencing and negotiation skills
Ability to build effective relationships with senior managers and other key stakeholders
High impact presentation skills, demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to think strategically
Proven track record in managing diverse and complex legal portfolios
