Role Description
Introduction
Accepting the role of residential home manager means committing to serving people with intellectual disabilities and the community. This is a role of responsibility and service, not a promotion.
1. Role of the House Manager
The House Leader, just like the assistant, lives with the core members (people with intellectual disabilities) and shares their daily lives. They bear full responsibility for the home: the core members' house life, supervision of the assistants, and management of financial resources.
They are the home’s point of reference, provide direction, and set priorities in accordance with L’Arche’s charter, mission statement, and the community’s constitution. They ensure the well-being of each person, coordinate all activities related to home life, and ensure the home runs smoothly.
The house leader reports directly to the homes coordinator.
2. Required Qualifications
In addition to the qualifications required to be an assistant, the house leader must:
Plan schedules, medical appointments, and daily activities
Manage the home’s budget and the budgets of the residents
Work effectively as part of a team
Make decisions and manage conflicts
Delegate, motivate, challenge, lead, and represent the residence

Oversee the operation and management of thomee h
Ensure the well-being and personal growth of core members (people with intellectual disabilities)
Supervise, coordinate, train, and lead the team of assistants
Foster a sense of community within the residence and in the local community
4. Specific Duties
4.1 Residence Management and Coordination
Manage the petty cash fund and the residence budget
Make purchases in accordance with the budget
Maintain the home’s vehicle and equipment, ensuring proper upkeep and repairs
Maintain positive relationships with families and coordinate visits, leave, and events
Ensure the home’s safety and communicate all relevant information
4.2 Well-being and growth of residents
Follow service and intervention plans
Adapt daily routines to individual needs
Schedule medical appointments and keep health records up to date
Follow medical prescriptions and protocols
Encourage independence and accountability in all aspects of life
Manage core members’ finances
4.3 Team supervision and coordination
Communicate L’Arche’s values and promote the home’s traditions
Schedule assistants’ work hours, time off, and vacations
Welcome and supervise interns
Train new assistants and prepare annual evaluations
Facilitate team meetings and promote continuing education
4.4 Development of Community Life
Prepare and facilitate house meetings
Maintain positive relationships with parents, volunteers, neighbors, and other residences
Promote spiritual life and mutual support within the team
Ensure a participatory decision-making process that includes core members and assistants
Participate in regional meetings, committees, and training sessions as needed
5. Evaluation
The house leader is evaluated annually by the residence coordinator and the community manager, after consulting with core members. The evaluation focuses on:
The quality of support provided to residents
The operation of the residence and resource management
Team supervision and development
Contribution to community life and house activities
