Position Responsibilities
Critical Care Nurses (MICU) provide direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles. In addition to general nursing care, responsibilities of Medical ICU Nurses include (but are not limited to):
1. Consults and coordinates with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans
2. Prepares and administers (orally, subcutaneously, through an IV) and records prescribed medications. Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with the policy regarding the administration of medications by a licensed registered nurse
3. Provides basic, bedside care
4. Initiates patient education plan, as prescribed by physician. Teaches patients and significant others how to manage their illness/injury.
5. Records patients’ medical information and vital signs
6. Takes samples for lab work, orders prescribed lab work and evaluates/interprets lab reports
7. Prepares equipment and aids physician during examination and treatment of patient
8. Responds to life-saving situations based upon nursing standards and protocol
9. Records all care information concisely, accurately and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms
10. Applies Hemodynamic, Phlebotomy and IV protocols
11. Monitors and adjusts specialized equipment used on patients, and interprets and records electronic displays, such as intracranial pressures, central venous pressures, pulmonary artery pressures, and cardiac rhythms from cardiac monitors, respirators, ventilators, manometers, oxygen pumps, etc.
12. Monitors catheters, leads and tubing for proper placement and functioning
13. Initiates corrective action whenever information from monitoring/life support equipment shows adverse symptomatology
14. Acts as patient advocate by supporting the basic rights, values and beliefs of the patient
15. Communicates to family/significant others appropriate information on patient’s condition
16. Performs other position-related duties as assigned, depending on assignment setting
17. Punctual and dependent for assigned/confirmed shifts
Personnel Responsibilities
1. Assisting with the orientation of new staff.
2. Assisting senior staff in the assessment of junior and new staff members.
3. Participating in teaching programmes for staff.
Administrative Responsibilities
1. Ensuring the maintenance of good relationships, communications and teamwork with all disciplines within the department and other departments of the hospital concerned with Operating Department work.
Self-preparation
1. Monitoring of the unit for its adequacy prior to commencement of duty.

2. Maintaining a comfortable environment.
3. Ensure aseptic technique in performing procedures.
4. Completing documentation.
Health and Safety at Work
1. Ensure safety for patients and colleagues.
2. Be totally aware of emergency fire drills
3. Maintain clear corridors and emergency exits at all times.
4. Maintain safe working conditions at all times.
5. Report mishaps, accidents and complaints immediately in accordance with Hospital policies.

Staff members have a legal duty of confidence to patients. Any employee disclosing confidential/ patient records or information to any unauthorized person or persons will render the employee subject to disciplinary action, which may result in dismissal.
