Qualifications
DUE TO THE SIGNIFICANT CULTURAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION, THIS POSITION IS DESIGNATED FOR INDIGENOUS CANDIDATES. APPLICANTS MUST SELF‑DECLARE ON THEIR COVER LETTER/RESUME AS INDIGENOUS (FIRST NATION, MÉTIS AND/OR INUIT)
MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:
Undergraduate bachelor’s degree is required – social sciences or helping profession preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
At least three years of directly related experience involving post-secondary students required. Experience should include: careful assessments of people and procedures, advising students about admission requirements to a diverse selection of programs and informing about career information resources.
Demonstrated experience working with Indigenous communities (either on or off-campus) required.
Must have experience with traditional Indigenous practices, ceremonies, and protocols.
Experience with student development theory, especially as it relates to Indigenous students, preferred.
Experience with student financial aid and/or community funding assistance desirable.
Experience with Banner (INB) Records System an Aurora Student Registration system is preferred.
An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Key responsibilities
Responsibilities:
STUDENT ADVISING:
On a daily basis, work with (and make recommendations for) current and prospective students who drop-in (in person or virtual), phone, text or e-mail to seek advice about:
admission to and requirements of undergraduate programs at UM
course and program selection and revisions
academic status (grades, warnings, etc. and making sure students understand implications
interpretation of university regulation
personal problems that affect their academic status and/or progress
academic programs and career options
Aurora registration instruction and assistance
assistance with requests for deferred examinations and appeals
Student discussions about personal and academic experiences include, but are not limited to:
academic policies
course selections
about experiences and problems
academic and career goals
academic performance and discuss options for improvement or withdrawal
implications of academic warnings and suspension
referral resources as necessary
helpful actions to improve academic success if struggling with coursework or courseload
summer academic plans
subsequent year course selection, academic plans and options for further study including graduate studies options
Interpret U1 and other faculties and school’s policy and practices as they apply to individual students.
Make referrals to U of M units that provide student-related services (e.g. U1, Student Counselling, Financial Aid & Awards, Career Services, Academic Learning Centre, etc.).
Accept referrals from other faculties and units to facilitate processes or discussions with students.
Make referrals to various Indigenous organizations, Elders, and other culturally relevant supports.
Make referrals to the Métis Inclusion Coordinator, Post-Secondary Education Counsellors or other student service specialists.
General financial advising especially in regard to Band Funding and Indigenous-specific awards.
Explain necessary paperwork to ensure institutional and/or funding requirements are met and write support letters as needed.
Provide assistance to students when they are seeking help with emergency and short-term loans, housing needs and issues, childcare, food banks, and subsidy programs.
Provide personal and cultural supports to Indigenous students individually or in group-setting to assist with overcoming personal challenges.
Communicate with students in a timely matter whether email, phone, or documentation requests, including referrals and follow up support.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of UM policies, admissions requirements, and student-focused opportunities.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of systems operations and advise appropriate personnel of problems.
Provide recommendations on updates to various University guides and service manuals when necessary.
Advise Director and advising supervisor on institutional policies and procedures which may unintentionally disadvantage Indigenous students and make recommendations for change.
PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT AND STUDENT ENGAGEMENT:
Work with the ISC team to create and maintain a warm and welcoming environment.
As part of the ISC team, contribute ideas and co-facilitate events and activities that aim to strengthen students’ cultural identities.
As part of the ISC team, organize and facilitate opportunities the unit hosts that offers cultural learning for the campus-wide community.
Contribute to the organization and presentation of information sessions for students, prospective students, parents, high school teachers, principals, First Nation Education Authorities, etc.
Contribute to the organization, implementation and presentation of programming for current students with an emphasis on student development.
Assist and participate with the initiation and development of orientation programs for new and/or prospective students, including Indigenous Orientation
Participate as a facilitator in orientation-related events including Indigenous Orientation.
Facilitate the Qualico Bride to Success program which provides Indigenous students with holistic supports and opportunities to transition into first year university.
Facilitate, develop, and deliver holistic programming for first year students as they enter post -secondary studies.
Promote, manage, and evaluate the program for improvement and expansion.
Work closely and collaboratively with the Student Support program coordinator to build a community of first-year student learners and develop their sense of belonging on campus.
Collaborate with unit staff, other campus units, community, and alumni to generate opportunities to add value to the program.
With the ISC advising team, identify common needs/interests of students and co-coordinate workshops and information sessions as needs arise.
Participate in and occasionally present materials at workshops and conferences affiliated with the secondary or post-secondary educational systems, and academic advising profession.
Liaise with the U1 First Year Centre, the Admissions office, Student Affairs, and Academic Departments to provide a network of support for students.
Under the guidance of the Director and Advisor supervisor, and in consultation with other ISC colleagues, contribute to the revision and update of applicable unit standard operating documents.
With direction from the director and supervisor, work with Indigenous Engagement & Communications (IEC) to create program specific materials (e.g. brochures, marketing materials) and write web updates and assist in the distribution and promotion of program materials.
Create, contribute to, broadly publicize, and maintain a current database of resources both within the University community and externally to it which may be of use to Indigenous students.
Oversee 1-2 part-time students (if required) including recommendations to hiring, on-the job training, mentoring and assignment of duties.
Be a primary member of the Graduation Pow Wow planning committee, be a co-lead of a committee or sub-committee and provide assistance and support to the annual traditional Graduation Pow Wow.
Maintain an active appreciation and understanding of current community, civic, provincial, and national issues and situations which may impact Indigenous communities in general and Indigenous students in particular.
Additional Duties:
Represent the ISC at various functions throughout the year, both on and off campus.
Assist with other important ISC/OVPI/UM events throughout the year.
Represent the Indigenous Student Centre on various and appropriate institution-wide committees.
Relieve front desk receptionist when needed.
Complete projects as assigned by the Director.
May be required to perform related duties not exceeding skills and capabilities as required.
