JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: The Assistant Office Head for IT Project Management is responsible for planning, executing, and delivering complex information technology projects that support the Georgia Department of Transportation’s mission, operational goals, and regulatory requirements. In addition to managing cross-functional IT projects, this role directly supervises and develops IT staff, ensuring projects are delivered on time, within scope, and aligned with GDOT standards, security requirements, and governance processes.
Key Responsibilities
Plan, manage, and deliver multiple concurrent IT projects, including system implementations, upgrades, integrations, and infrastructure initiatives.
Develop and maintain project charters, work plans, schedules, budgets, risk registers, and status reports.
Ensure projects adhere to GDOT policies, state IT standards, cybersecurity requirements, procurement rules, and project governance frameworks.
Identify project risks and issues; develop mitigation strategies and escalate as appropriate.
Coordinate with business owners, IT leadership, vendors, and external partners to ensure project alignment with agency priorities.
Monitor project performance and report progress, milestones, and outcomes to leadership and stakeholders.
Supervise and manage assigned IT staff, including project coordinators, analysts, or technical team members.
Assign work, set priorities, and ensure staff workloads align with project timelines and resource plans.
Provide coaching, mentoring, and technical guidance to support employee growth and project success
Conduct performance management activities, including goal setting, feedback, evaluations, and development planning.
Identify training needs and support staff skill development in project management, systems, and GDOT processes.
Foster a collaborative, accountable, and customer-focused team environment.
Serve as a primary point of contact between IT, business units, and external vendors for assigned projects.
Facilitate project meetings, status briefings, and decision-making sessions.
Manage vendor performance, deliverables, and contract compliance in coordination with procurement and legal teams.
Contribute to the development and maintenance of IT project management standards, templates, and best practices.
Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance project delivery, resource utilization, and staff effectiveness.
Ensure documentation, knowledge transfer, and project close-out activities are completed in accordance with GDOT requirements.
AGENCY SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Business Administration, Project Management, or a related field OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
Demonstrated experience managing IT projects from initiation through close-out.
Experience supervising or leading staff, including assigning work and managing performance.
AGENCY PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience managing IT projects in a government or large public-sector environment.
Project Management Professional (PMP), PRINCE2, or similar certification.
Experience with state IT governance, procurement, or compliance requirements.
Strong knowledge of SDLC, Agile, or hybrid project management methodologies
KEY COMPETENCIES

Ability to manage competing priorities and complex timelines.
Analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
Proficiency with project management tools and reporting methods.
Leadership experience in managing HR teams or HR operations preferred.
Associate degree in a related field managerial role; or one (1) year at the lower level Mgr 3, Transport Specialist (TRM032) or at position equivalent.
