Job description
Company: The Happy Company ®
Function: Legal & Compliance
Title: Senior Manager — Legal
Location: Chennai, TN
CTC — 15 LPA
Position Overview:
We are looking for a trusted, high-integrity professional with a strong background in Indian law, to serve as internal counsel, seeking to add value to and be the legal & compliance “backbone” of our company. This role will ensure that we operate within the law at all times, offer counsel on legal issues, create an effective guardian of the organisation and facilitate business strategies development. The successful candidate will be able to ensure thorough, thoughtful legal compliance and limit financial risk exposure while having the ability to work with a variety of functions and people both within, and outside, the company.
Key Responsibilities:
• Provide ready, real-time expert and strategic legal advice to management and senior leadership • Set internal governance, legal & compliance policies in conjunction with the respective functions and manage the impact of external factors from a legal point of view
• Evaluate and weigh multiple inputs and the legal impact of any decision and/or course of action • Anticipate issues proactively, both legal and reputational, and serve to accurately estimate the risks, as well as the process of mitigating those risks—keeping in mind at all times full strategic alignment with the company’s mission and growth objectives
• Base decision-making processes on the back of rock-solid ethics, integrity and alignment with our value system while protecting the company’s interests at all times
• Create associations of trust & respect with all key stakeholders, internal & external • Deal with external parties as first port-of-legal-call: regulators, external counsel, politicians, customers, law-enforcement & other stakeholders, internal or external, requiring legal intervention
• Attract, develop, motivate and drive performance from larger management team including, but not limited to, the conducting of learning sessions and workshops on the importance of legal frameworks, legal documents and the written word, and their deep enforcement within the organisation
• Draft agreements, contracts and all other legal documents required by the company, always seeking to minimise risk, and maximise the company’s legal rights and protections—and be ready to “roll up sleeves” instead of relying on “juniors” or external counsel. A DIY, prompt, responsive and humble attitude to work is a basic pre-requisite at our company for all roles
• Meet legal objectives as set from time to time by the senior management • Deal with complex, significant matters across finance, compliance & anywhere the law is applicable • Keep abreast of legislative and regulatory changes that are relevant to the company at large • Communicate effectively with all other teams and company staff to ensure necessary flow on legal issues affecting company operations
Key Requirements & Skills:
• Be a person of impeccable trustworthiness, confidentiality, integrity and discipline, leading by example for the rest of the company staff, displaying a high degree of professional ethics and gravitas
• Proven general counsel ability in some, or ideally, a variety of business environments
• Clear ability to be a team player with leadership skills, with an analytical mind and a problem-solving mindset
• In-depth understanding of how legal issues affect corporate organisations, and to be well-versed in how businesses operate (particularly in India, with global exposure preferred) with financial/economic acumen
• Broad, relevant, and updated legal knowledge (corporate law, commercial contracts, criminal law, labour, etc.)
• Familiarity with both basic finance and accounting, as well as management principles preferred
• Excellent judgement, analytical skills, people skills, organisational and multitasking abilities
• Outstanding (and we truly mean exceptional) communication & articulation skills, both oral and written, in English (1 or 2 additional Indian languages optional)
• Ability to anticipate legal issues or risks, and to “see around the corner”
• Bachelor of Laws (or JD) degree with practicing or counselling experience, with a Master’s degree being an ideal preference
