The Role
We are looking for a junior press officer to work in our busy press office during their university placement year. This is a fantastic first-hand opportunity to work with experienced media industry professionals, internally and externally, and learn exactly how an in-house brand press office operates over the course of a year.

Through the likes of media commentary, data insights and case studies, the TopCashback press office helps spread the word about the benefits of savvy spending and other ways to save. As the first point of contact for members of the media, the junior press officer will support with distributing press materials to journalists and media outlets such as statements, briefing notes or press releases.

Whilst no day is ever the same, the successful candidate can expect tasks to include writing concise and compelling copy to highlight offers from the brand, hone newsworthy story angles, and draft media commentary that highlights TopCashback’s expertise in how to save whilst spending.

The junior press officer is also responsible for administrative tasks such as maintaining press databases and media contact lists, as well as monitoring and evaluating media coverage to produce accurate media summaries and reports. These duties are essential in helping the team demonstrate the great work being achieved to other parts of the business.

Their day-to-day work will support campaigns lead by the press officers and PR Manager, who will mentor them to deliver creative ideas through from start to finish.
The junior press officer will respond to basic media enquiries with supervision, with the ambition and aim to build confidence and competence in their abilities as the year goes on.

The successful applicant will be motivated by a career in PR, or communications
more generally. Enjoying working as part of a team whilst also being able to work and complete tasks independently after initial training is essential. An interest in retail, personal finance, deal hunting, or saving money is desirable.

The role will be based at TopCashback’s London office based near Monument Station and offers hybrid working. Occasional travel to TopCashback’s HQ in Staffordshire may be required based on business needs, including some training and initiation days.

We’re invested in helping our junior press officer get as much out of their year with us as possible, so we’d love to welcome someone with bags of enthusiasm and a willingness to learn. An open mind is important, whilst embracing both giving and receiving constructive feedback.

Full training will be given.

Key skills:

Desirable: Studying a related university course to maximise knowledge and experience – such as marketing, media, journalism, film, communications, politics or finance
Eagerness to learn about the PR and news industry, and wider media communications
Accuracy, attention to detail and proof-reading skills
Clear communicator - written and verbally
Basic data skills, including inputting and interpreting tables and graphs from Excel
Personable – a desire to build relationships and a genuine interest in people in order to manage internal and external relationships, including potential case studies
Time management and prioritisation skills – after training you will be required to manage your own workloads, so the ability to react to changing priorities and demands whilst working to deadline is key
Creativity and imagination – someone who is alive to new and emerging trends and not afraid to offer ideas and suggestions from day one
Familiarity with computer software and email systems e.g. Microsoft Office, Google Workspace is beneficial, but training can be given
