Job Description
This is a junior-level security role based in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). The Junior Security Officer will support incident response, investigations, and security operations under the guidance of senior security staff and the SOC lead. The role emphasizes learning, documentation, and hands-on development of core security skills. Hybrid work model: approximately 50% in office (GTA locations).
Key responsibilities
Triage and investigate security incidents escalated from the IT Service Desk or internal support teams, following documented playbooks and SLAs.
Investigate malware infections, data leakage, network abuse, spam/email viruses, phishing attempts, and IDS/IPS alerts; escalate to senior staff when required.
Use SIEM and EDR tools to search logs, validate alerts, and support containment and remediation activities.
Document all investigation steps, evidence, and resolutions in the ticketing system and submit post-incident summaries as required.
Assist with vulnerability tracking and remediation; raise and follow remediation tickets.
Support periodic risk assessments, security control audits, and validation activities.
Collect and document basic security metrics from email/web filtering, SIEM, and other systems for reporting to IT stakeholders.
Contribute to security awareness activities (phishing campaigns, posters, short communications) and support tabletop exercises.
Follow change control and asset management processes when implementing security changes or recommendations.
Maintain and update internal documentation, runbooks and standard operating procedures.
Keep current with security trends and participate in team training and knowledge-sharing sessions.
Working with Infrastructure team on the deployment of new security services or the hardening of existing services
Development of Security process and documentation
Required (must-have) skills and experience
Technical/college diploma in IT, cybersecurity, or equivalent practical experience.
Demonstrable fundamentals in Windows desktop and server technologies.
Solid understanding of TCP/IP and basic networking concepts (ports, protocols, subnetting).
Familiarity with a SIEM (searching and basic alert triage) and basic exposure to EDR tools.
Experience or familiarity with ticketing systems (ServiceNow, Jira, or equivalent).
Basic log analysis skills (Windows Event Logs, firewall/proxy logs, email gateway logs).
Basic scripting ability or willingness to learn (PowerShell or Python) to automate routine tasks.
Familiarity with cloud basics (Azure fundamentals and where security logs are generated).
Strong written and verbal communication with the ability to document investigations clearly.
Demonstrated critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
Customer-focused mindset and ability to work with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Nice to have
Experience with Wallix Bastion/BestSafe and SSL certificate generation and deployment.
Familiarity with Cofense or other phishing platforms.
Experience with Secureworks or equivalent cloud-native SIEM.
Familiarity with EDR products such as Symantec and Sophos
Basic knowledge of packet capture tools (Wireshark/tcpdump) and network traffic analysis.
Bilingual English/French is a plus.
Prior SOC, helpdesk, or IT support experience.
