Purpose:

Performs basic and routine tasks, including general laboratory maintenance, routine cleaning and preventative maintenance of laboratory equipment and glassware. Under close supervision, provides general technical assistance and/or carries out routine tests using various types of equipment, and records results of analysis.

Typical tasks and duties:

Assists with general laboratory operation and maintenance including inventory, stocking supplies, cleaning and organizing labs.

Prepares media and performs other simple preparation tasks.

Washes and autoclaves glassware; prepares equipment and glassware.

Performs routine laboratory procedures as required.

Records test results but does not interpret beyond what is necessary to indicate the need for modifications in procedures. Notes unusual occurrences.

May collect samples for testing using a straightforward sampling procedure. Assists with routine data collection, sampling, identification, sorting and preparation tasks.

Maintains research-related records and databases, entering data according to established protocols. Refers complications or problems to technologist or technician.

May assist in setting up laboratories.

Carries out other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of the position.

Knowledge, skills, education and experience:

High school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge of standard maintenance techniques.

Minimum of experience in a related field.

Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written directions and to operate laboratory equipment.
