The opportunity
This is a 6-month part-time and fixed-term opportunity to cover a secondment within our Kaupapa Māori Team. This role builds and sustains meaningful relationships between Council, local iwi and hapū with a specific focus on the iwi and hapū of Tauranga Moana. You will support Council to fulfil its statutory obligations to Māori and support Māori to input into Council and be effectively represented as well as build the capacity of Council to respond to Kaupapa Māori. You will support the work of the Kaupapa Māori team in delivering Council’s framework for Kaupapa Māori.

To set you up for success, you’ll have
Expert knowledge of Te Reo Māori and tikanga Māori

At least 5 years experience in a role working with iwi and hapū on projects that are important to them and leading capacity building to understand and implement Te Reo Māori and tikanga Māori.

Extensive experience in building and sustaining relationships with Māori.

Knowledge of local government legislation and statutory requirements relevant to the position.

Expert knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi (Treaty of Waitangi) - has an understanding of the Treaty of Waitangi, Tikanga Māori and its implications for working in our community.

Thorough and current knowledge of local Māori structures.

Knowledge of community development trends and processes.

Ability to network and build relationships with Māori, government agencies and community groups.

Ability to network with and build relationships with all sectors of the community.

Demonstrated computer literacy with competency in the use of Microsoft Office (including Outlook, word and Excel).

Desirable qualifications include:
A tertiary qualification in Te Reo Māori
