About the Analytical Services Branch
The Analytical Services Branch consists of a team of over 100 staff based in North Ryde and Port Melbourne. We are responsible for conducting chemical and biological measurement on a wide range of samples (including water, soil, food and pharmaceuticals). Performing a diverse range of tests (including elements, nutrients, organic contaminants and microbiological parameters). We provide analytical solutions and technical expertise for a large set of private sector and government clients across the environmental, food and health sectors, enabling them to meet their business, research and regulatory compliance needs. We also work closely with the tertiary education sector in Australia and have a number of international stakeholders.
The opportunity
The role of Inorganic Analyst resides within the Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory at NMI North Ryde. The Inorganic Analyst is responsible for sample preparation and routine analysis for trace elements, nutrients and other inorganic analysis and will possess the skills and experience required at the APS3 work level standard. The analyst must have significant experience in a laboratory environment, be proficient in various preparation techniques and sample analysis using specialized laboratory equipment and instruments. The analyst reports to the Senior Analyst within the Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory.

We are offering ongoing role of Inorganic Analyst that will reside within the Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory at NMI North Ryde.
Our ideal candidate
National Measurement Institute (NMI) is looking for a candidate with tertiary qualifications in science with an understanding, history of success and passion for both the technical and work processes of a laboratory operation. The successful candidate will seek to build leadership, interpersonal and communication skills and have a history of working well within a team. You will ideally have:


Experience with sample preparation and analysis for trace elements and other inorganic analysis for example nutrients, BOD, cyanide by acid and enzymatic hydrolysis etc. within an environmental or food testing laboratory.
Knowledge of QA/QC requirements for NATA accredited testing laboratory and GMP environment.
Experience working with sample preparation under biosecurity requirements.
Strong ability to deliver high quality results under pressure in a busy laboratory environment.
Demonstrated experience with working in a team environment to achieve mutual goals.
Demonstrated ability to consistently exhibit the NMI values of being adaptable, accountable, innovative, inclusive, influential and strategic. This includes building and sustaining positive relationships with team members and other teams, fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace, leading by example and showing integrity by being honest, transparent and accountable.
What you will do
To undertake sample preparation of environmental and food/biota samples to allow trace elements and other inorganic analysis using ICPMS/ICPOES, Discrete Analyser, SFA, IC etc.
To undertake various wet chemistry tests and prepare associated reports.
Work in a team environment and prioritise work to achieve targeted turnaround times of results.
To provide mentoring, on-the-job training and guidance on a range of analytical testing methods and instrumentation to a team members.
Liaise with stakeholders and assist to resolve straightforward matters for example communicating with the service engineers to schedule service calls, obtaining consumables quotes from the suppliers etc.
Understanding and execution of NMI WH&S manual and safety SOPs particular to the Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory.
Eligibility
The successful candidate will have tertiary qualifications in a scientific field (ideally chemistry) and have:


significant experience working in a laboratory environment
proficiency in various preparation techniques and sample analysis using specialised laboratory equipment.
To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, candidates must be Australian Citizens.

Positions require a Baseline security clearance and successful candidates will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.

A merit pool may be established and used to fill future vacancies within 18 months from the date the vacancy was first advertised in the Gazette.
