Your Opportunity:

The successful candidate will provide support to the University of Alberta Hospital Hematology Laboratories by performing duties to aid in the laboratory testing and investigation of patient samples. The incumbent will work closely with many different chemicals and patient samples. The position is required to assist at bone marrow collections on the ward and in the operating room. They will perform primary manipulation and other specific related procedures on specimens as set out in the Laboratory Procedure Manuals. The Laboratory Assistant I is responsible for performing quality control procedures and equipment maintenance, data entry, filing, retrieving and disposing of clinical samples, pipette calibration verification, phlebotomy, document storage and retrieval, and stocking supplies. The incumbent contacts nursing stations, physicians, clinics and other hospitals and health care facilities regarding specimens.

As a Medical Laboratory Assistant I, you will provide high quality service to clients of the clinical laboratory in an effective, efficient and safe manner. You will be responsible for a variety of laboratory functions including procurement, handling, processing, dispatching and testing of specimens, performing procedures and reporting results.

Required Qualifications:
Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.

Additional Required Qualifications:
Ability to work independently as well as in a group setting is essential. Successful demonstration of laboratory skills and data entry is required. The successful candidate will have the ability to safely and appropriately handle chemicals, solvents and patient samples. Lifting up to 50 pounds is required. Good interpersonal skills, effective time management and the ability to set priorities are necessary. The successful candidate must be adaptable and flexible within an environment of change and interruption. The selected candidate will have the ability to listen, comprehend and orally respond to relay information, directions or questions in person, over the phone or in writing in an accurate, clear and concise manner. Knowledge of medical terminology, WHMIS and SDS information is required. The successful candidate must represent Laboratory Services in a respectful, professional and courteous manner. Preferred Qualifications:
Familiarity with Connect Care / Epic / Beaker. Preference will be given to candidates with a minimum of 2 years Laboratory Assistant experience. Preference will be given to candidates with hospital experience. Preference will be given to candidates with pipetting experience. Preference will be given to candidates with packaging of Transportation of Dangerous Goods experience.
