Job Description
We’re looking for (Civil) Laboratory Technicians to join our teams at Mount Wellington You’ll test the materials that keep our roads and infrastructure safe and performing well – from aggregates and asphalt to binders and road materials – helping our crews deliver Good Work across Tāmaki Makaurau.
Mō te tūranga | About the role
This role splits your time between the lab and the field. Some days you’ll be out on-site collecting samples and running field tests; other days you’ll be in the lab putting materials through their paces and making sense of the results.
You’ll be part of a friendly, straight‑up team that looks after quality control testing for major construction projects. It sounds technical, and it is – but you won’t be left to figure it out alone. If you bring transferable skills and the right attitude, we’ll back you with full on‑the‑job training.
We work side by side, not top‑down. Titles matter less than ideas, effort and reliability, and you’ll see the impact of your work out on real projects – not just on a spreadsheet.
Ngā kawenga matua | Key responsibilities
Carry out quality control testing of aggregates, asphalt, binders and other road materials
Collect and prepare samples both in the field and in the laboratory
Enter, analyse and interpret test data to support decision‑making and keep quality standards high
Think beyond the how to the why – understanding what your results mean for safety and performance on site
Follow lab and site safety procedures and help keep work areas safe, tidy and well organised
Work closely with lab teammates, supervisors and site crews to support project delivery
When the stakes are high, we switch on, pull together and deliver to a very high standard.
Kei te kimi mātou i tētahi e whai ana i ēnei pūkenga | We’re looking for someone with
Ability to work both day and night shifts as required
Class 1 Full driver’s licence (Class 2 is an advantage)
Qualifications in engineering, geotechnical or material science are a plus, but not essential – we’ll provide full role‑specific training for the right person
Similar experience in asphalt or aggregate testing, or strong interest/knowledge of construction materials (preferred)
A strong health and safety mindset and good situational awareness, in the lab and on site
Clear communication skills, written and verbal, and confidence working with different teams
If you’re after rigid hierarchies and a perfectly predictable day, we’re probably not for you. If you want to learn, be trusted with real responsibility and see the impact of your work out on the road, you’ll feel at home here.
