Laser Laboratory Engineer – Supporting Cutting-Edge Research & Innovation
Full-time, ongoing position at our Hawthorn campus
HEW 7 salary + 17% super and staff benefits

About the Role
Are you fascinated by lasers and their role in cutting-edge scientific discovery? Swinburne’s School of Science, Engineering, and Technology is seeking a Laser Laboratory Engineer to support world-class research and teaching facilities.

In this specialised role, you will be responsible for the operation, safety, and advancement of sophisticated laser systems. Working alongside leading scientists in physics, materials science, chemistry, and biology, you will play a crucial role in driving innovation across multiple disciplines.

As a Laser Laboratory Engineer, you will oversee multi-laboratory facilities, ensuring smooth operations for researchers and students. Your expertise in ultrafast laser spectroscopy—including transient absorption, time-resolved fluorescence, four-wave mixing, and coherent Raman scattering—will be essential in providing technical support and maintaining cutting-edge instrumentation.

Beyond laser operation and maintenance, you will lead the implementation of laser safety protocols, manage interlock system installations, and ensure compliance with AU/NZ Laser Safety Standards. You will also be responsible for procuring and maintaining essential safety equipment, such as protective eyewear, shielding, and beam containment solutions.

Collaboration is central to this role. You will work closely with the ultrafast science team to develop new initiatives, optimise facility use, and engage with stakeholders. Additionally, you will train and mentor students and researchers, equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed to work safely and effectively with laser technology. Your ability to develop and enforce policies will be key to ensuring compliance with university and legislative standards.

To succeed in this role, you should have expertise in ultrafast laser spectroscopy, along with a strong understanding of laser operation, maintenance, and safety compliance. Your problem-solving skills will enable you to work independently and collaboratively, while your excellent communication abilities will help you provide expert guidance, foster collaboration, and support users effectively.

If you're looking for an opportunity to make a significant impact in ultrafast laser science, we’d love to hear from you. Join us and help shape the future of laser research at Swinburne!

About You
To be suitable for this role you will need to have experience in the below key accountabilities:

Experience with ultrafast laser spectroscopy techniques (e.g., transient absorption, time-resolved fluorescence, four-wave mixing, and coherent Raman scattering).
Skilled in operating and maintaining lasers and related instruments.
Knowledge of laser safety, lab processes, and maintenance.
Procurement of laser safety equipment (e.g., eyewear, interlocks, shielding).
Experience training users on laser safety.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Strong teamwork and independent problem-solving skills.
Ability to learn, develop, and apply policies to ensure compliance with university and legal requirements.

Qualifications
Degree with proven four years subsequent relevant experience; or extensive experience and expertise in technical and administrative fields; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
