Position Overview
This Lecturer position involves research, teaching and service within the Department of International Relations. The successful candidate will publish high-quality, impactful research in peer-reviewed journals, academic presses, and policy fora, and pursuing grant-funding opportunities within a world-class Department known for the support and mentorship that it provides to its early career researchers.
The role has been established to support the Department’s contribution to the Bachelor of Asia Pacific Affairs (BAPA), a dual‑degree program delivered with Ritsumeikan University (RU) in Japan. While based at the University campus in Canberra, the Lecturer will teach at RU’s Osaka Ibaraki Campus approximately every second year, with travel and accommodation provided. In non‑travel years, they will contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching at the University and may supervise honours and graduate research students. Academic staff typically teach one course per semester, with a reduced teaching load in the year of RU teaching.
The position also involves service contributions to the School and College, including administrative and planning work that supports research and education activities, as well as serving on School and College committees.
The Person
Our ideal candidate will be an early-career scholar with a strong record of teaching and research in IR. They will have expertise that complements the Department’s strengths in the International Relations of the Asia-Pacific, Peace and Conflict Studies, International Relations Theory, Security Studies, and Diplomacy Studies. The successful applicant will be enthusiastic about engaging diverse undergraduate and graduate student cohorts, able to work collaboratively, and committed to contributing to the BAPA programme and the Department’s wider teaching, research, and service activities. They will have a demonstrated ability to develop a research agenda that advances the study of global politics. A demonstrated ability to supervise research students is desirable.

The School comprises a number of vibrant, multi-disciplinary, intellectual communities: the Department of International Relations (IR), the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre, the Department of Political and Social Change, and the Department of Pacific Affairs.

The Department of IR is one of the world’s leading centres for the study of global politics. Known for its commitment to work that links theory and practice with historical and contemporary analysis, the Department provides a dynamic and collaborative environment for research and teaching in global politics, with expertise in a wide range of areas, including the International Relations of the Asia Pacific, Peace and Conflict Studies, International Relations Theory, Security Studies, and Diplomacy Studies. Established in 1949, the Department is currently home to 17 permanent faculty, who work on diverse issue areas, including atrocity prevention, gender, war and revolution, AI, race, migration, political economy, global governance, and changing patterns of world order. The Department is also home to a thriving community of more than 30 PhD students and 100 Master's students.
