Legal Advocate

The Role
Reporting to the Vice President - Legal and Operations Manager, while also receiving mentorship and guidance from the inhouse General Counsel, the Advocate provides professional representation and support to the members in all aspects of their employment. In addition, the Advocate actions the associations industrial strategy to drive improvements in this dynamic sector.
More specifically you will be:
Providing professional collective representation and support in employment matters (including the negotiation of collective agreements)
Building constructive relationships with industry stakeholders
Supporting individual members with employment disputes, investigations, and mediation
Keeping up to date with all relevant changes to legislation, understanding and communicating their impact to members
Producing high-quality legal research, analysis and opinions on issues related to employment and industry law
Driving member engagement and identifying opportunities for promoting collective bargaining and campaigns on relevant issues.
Your Background
Relevant tertiary qualification (holding a current practicing certificate is not required but could be advantageous)
Ideally 2+ years of experience in a professional industrial relations OR employment relations OR advocacy role, however recent law graduates will be considered
Excellent knowledge and understanding of NZ employment law and its practical application
Prior experience with computer-based legal research and document management systems
Exposure to rational problem-solving techniques and interest-based bargaining beneficial
Current NZ drivers’ licence (this role will involve some domestic travel which may occur with limited notice).
