• Global Banking and Markets (GBM) Legal provides support to the GBM businesses. The main GBM businesses are Banking, Markets, Capital Financing, Securities Services and the shared products of Global Trade and Receivables Finance, and Payments and Global Liquidity & Cash Management.
• The Global Legal Services – Banking Products team is part of the GBM Legal Department and provides advice guidance, and support to Global Banking and CMB by negotiating loan documentation such as bilateral uncommitted facilities/overdrafts, bilateral committed facilities, syndicated facility agreements, guarantees and guarantee confirmation letters, ancillary CP documentation and other industry-standard documentation. The team focusses on negotiating documentation in a streamlined manner that provides appropriate credit and legal protection for the Bank.
The Opportunity:
• The role holder, Assistant Legal Counsel, Bangalore is responsible for the day to day operations and delivery of a new India-based branch of the Global Legal Services – Banking Products team and is responsible for managing the legal risk and execution of a suite of documents, which will increase over time as part of the broader offshoring strategy of the Global Legal Function.
• The role holder is responsible for the drafting and negotiating of the various types of agreements, as well as projects involving legal research for a global network of stakeholders.
• Role Holder is accountable to the completion of tasks which includes but not limited to:
• Negotiation Support/Legal Drafting
• Promote a strong sense of teamwork to ensure all areas work collaborative and as efficiently as possible
• Technology / Workflow
• Process Re-engineering
• Ad-hoc projects within GBM Legal
• Given the unique position of being in the GSC, the individual will be required to bring standardization, where possible, across the documentation process across regions and therefore requires an individual to have the drive to establish and share best practices.
What you’ll do:
• Responsible for delivery of volumes and quality
• Effective and timely communication of matters requiring consideration and decision to the Regional Heads and Global Head of the function
• Helping the team to achieve team goals
• Shall engage very closely with senior stakeholders across product categories and client management within associated functions in charting out a very effective documentation process including definition of fully aligned desk instruction manual across all stakeholders who are involved in the process along with service and performance level agreements
• Following appropriate processes, procedures and understanding statutory and regulatory obligations
• Demonstrate creativity, defect free implementation of procedures and maintain high productivity levels through continuous improvement
• Fulfill appropriate training & development requirements and to lead and motivate staff with differing aspirations working in productivity-based environment where deadlines are critical
• Developing and maintaining information flows to and within the GLS Banking Products Regional teams
• Implementing and following drafting and negotiating best practices
• Ensuring costs and expenses are met by the relevant business/cost code wherever possible
• Addressing any areas of concern in conjunction with line management and/or the appropriate department
• Working closely with and influencing internal stakeholders and SMEs globally
• Delivery of a high-quality service with a complex set of activities against the backdrop of both the external legal and regulatory framework and the internal control framework of the Group Standards Manual while working in a pressurized, time sensitive environment
Requirements
What will you need to succeed in the role?
• Legal qualification with 6-8years plus of relevant work experience within the banking/financial services industry including experience in bilateral uncommitted facilities/overdrafts, bilateral committed facilities, syndicated facility agreements, guarantees and guarantee confirmation letters, ancillary CP documentation and other industry-standard documentation
• Ability to effectively engage and negotiate with senior stakeholders, demonstrating considered foresight and highly developed interpersonal skills
• Experience of successfully working with teams of highly skilled individuals
• Able to deal with and constructively resolve conflicting views and where necessary, escalate to senior management in a clear and succinct manner
• Be change oriented and able to cope with pressure and tight deadlines
What additional skills will be good to have?
• Able to understand and consolidate diverse and complex business information and identify/mitigate risk issues
• Evidence of very good prioritizing, planning, and organizing skills
• Ability to comprehend and minimize operational risks including wide understanding of Legal risk, audit controls and compliance requirements
• Ability to manage and develop a team staff across a diverse range of processes/products in order to equip them to handle scope expansion and also to handle any tasks for Legal teams
• Proven ability of innovativeness and challenging the status quo
• Exceptional communication skills and the ability to communicate appropriately across all levels of the organization; this includes written and verbal communications as well as visualizations
• Ability to deal effectively with ambiguity, complex matrix environment and multiple stakeholders
• Ability to look at the bigger picture as well as have a keen eye for detail
• Strong analytical capability with the ability to synthesize complex data
• Outstanding written/verbal communication and presentation skills
• Creative approach to problem solving
• Proven ability to prioritize competing demands.
• Good commercial and financial management ability

• Experience of working in a role with a proven record of senior stakeholder navigation and influencing
