The Mental Health Tribunal (Tribunal) is an independent statutory body funded and supported by the Department. The Tribunal is an essential safeguard under the Mental Health and Wellbeing Act 2022 to protect the rights and dignity of people with mental illness. The primary function of the Tribunal is to determine whether the criteria for compulsory mental health treatment as set out in the Act apply to a person.
About the role:
Working as part of a small team, the Legal Officer provides often time-critical oral and written legal advice to Tribunal members and staff about the Tribunal's statutory functions. The Legal Officer co-ordinates the preparation and editing of statements of reasons; and prepares responses to more complex FOI and other requests for hearing documents. The Legal Officer also develops or contributes to legal projects such as preparing or updating legal guidance and procedures for members and staff.

About you:
To be successful in the role we are looking for someone who is:
An effective communicator with highly developed legal, conceptual and analytical skills?

An effective team player and able to develop respectful and collaborative working relationship with a broad range of stakeholders?

Qualifications:
Applicants must be admitted to the Supreme Court of Victoria and have a current practising certificate or be eligible to obtain a practising certificate.
Experience:
Experience in court / tribunal legal or registry support or comparable experience in providing legal / registry support to areas with a high-volume case-flow system is highly desirable.
Demonstrated knowledge of issues associated with mental health law, administrative law and the Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act is highly desirable.
