At Library Services, our team of information specialists puts information and knowledge into the hands of healthcare workers, clinicians, and patients every day, empowering them to make well-informed, safe healthcare decisions. Reporting to the Team Lead, the Medical Librarian is responsible for the delivery of dynamic information and research services that support Alberta’s healthcare providers in evidence-informed decision making. With Library Services, you will collaborate with a fantastic team of library professionals in providing a world class information service. You will have opportunities to lead projects and contribute to the planning and advancement of the library through participation in service-oriented workgroups. You’ll be challenged daily by unique and interesting requests for research support and build skills in others through the provision of excellent and innovative evidence literacy instruction. As part of regular liaison activities, you will foster connections with clinicians to enable a culture of lifelong learning and use of high-quality evidence. Though this position is located in a hospital library environment, you will play a provincial role in supporting staff with their evidence and research needs. This position will be part of Acute Care Alberta effective April 1, 2026. Description:
The Medical Librarian performs complex literature searching activities and provides guidance on how to use evidence effectively. They are experts at searching and information retrieval in the health sciences and medicine and are adept at locating relevant internal resources. They are highly skilled at crafting and documenting complex search strategies for bibliographic databases, online repositories and sources of grey literature; creating and applying search hedges and filters; and identifying inclusion/exclusion criteria. They are proficient at helping clients identify and refine their research question through reference interviews. Through specialized evidence and information literacy training programs, the librarian builds organizational and individual information literacy capacity. The librarian regularly provides synchronous online evidence literacy training and should be comfortable with virtual teaching. As part of regular liaison and outreach activities, the librarian is responsible for building relationships with healthcare staff and promoting the library’s services and resources. Through liaison work, the librarian builds awareness and understanding of the importance of quality evidence in all aspects of healthcare decision making, research and patient care. As part of a high functioning team, the librarian will also lead workgroups, mentor staff, or attend and facilitate knowledge sharing events. The librarian provides input for the planning, administration, and operation of Library Services. The location of this position is flexible, and the candidate can be located in Edmonton, Red Deer or Calgary. A hybrid work arrangement is available, and librarians can work from home up to three days per week if they choose.

Required Qualifications:
Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS) or Master of Library Science (MLS) or equivalent from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited institution is required. A minimum of two years of direct professional experience in a health sciences library and demonstrated expert searching skills. Proficiency in information technology and computer applications used in libraries. Proven experience, skill, and understanding of advanced health sciences literature searching techniques and resources.

Additional Required Qualifications:
An undergraduate degree in health sciences or life sciences would be advantageous. Beneficial memberships include: Canadian Health Libraries Association (CHLA), Alberta Association of Health Libraries (AAHL), and/or the Medical Library Association (MLA). Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, effectively managing and setting priorities when faced with multiple tasks and deadlines. Ability to work effectively in a remote environment and communicate using online tools. Demonstrates flexibility, initiative and high degree of organizational skill, accuracy and attention to detail. Ability to communicate effectively in a professional and service-oriented manner. Ability to work effectively both independently and within a team. Ability to effectively manage and set priorities when faced with multiple tasks and deadlines. Ability to resolve conflict in a timely and professional manner. Ability to follow and adhere to Acute Care Alberta/Alberta Health Services policies, procedures, goals and objectives. Ability to safeguard Acute Care Alberta/Alberta Health Services information as private and confidential. Effective time management and multi-tasking abilities. Ability to create and document workflows and processes. Ability to solve complex problems that fall outside of standard procedures.
