BNP Paribas’ Global Markets business offers a broad range of products and services in the global interest rates, credit, currency, equities & commodity markets. Global Markets help their franchise of clients find effective ways to raise and invest capital as well as manage their exposure to risk.
Within Global Markets, Markets 360 is the client-facing research division consisting of economists and strategists providing in-depth economic and market analysis. From quick reactions following market-moving events, to longer-term publications showing thought leadership on key macro trends, our research helps our clients in their decision-making. You’ll be part of a passionate, engaging team with a focus on analytic rigour and developing individuals.
Purpose & Scope of Role
• Purpose: As a long-term intern, the role holder will contribute to the economic analysis of the team, including the development of new models, economic forecasting and written economic research.
• Scope: The European Economics team is responsible for coverage of the eurozone and its four largest economies (Germany, France, Italy and Spain) as well as the UK and Switzerland. Our analysis covers economics and political events that are relevant for financial markets.
Key Responsibilities of Role
We are interested in applications from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences, with some flexibility to adjust the role’s key responsibilities to best suit the individual’s strengths and development opportunities. Key responsibilities, however, include the following:
• Responsible for assisting in the production of written economic research, which can include:
• Carrying out economic analysis, including via the use of models;
• Providing written contributions to economic publications and/or leading on publications;
• Assist with the production of some economic forecasts.
• Responsible for developing the team’s quantitative infrastructure, for example:
• Development of new models;
• Maintenance of existing models;
• Automating existing processes.
• Responsible for assisting in routine administrative tasks, such as:
• Ensuring the timely and accurate uploading of economic forecasts to the M360 portal;
• Helping to generate marketing materials (e.g. presentations) in collaboration with senior staff members;
• Ensuring the timely and accurate production of weekly data and event calendars, flagging key flashpoints where necessary to the relevant people.
• The role holder should work under their own initiative wherever possible, but refer more complex and technical issues to more senior colleagues in a timely manner for resolution and advice.
Experience, Qualifications & Competencies
Essential
• Professional qualification (e.g. Bachelors degree), or suitable extensive experience in the relevant technical area;
• Strong analytical ability with good knowledge of econometrics and its application to macroeconomics;
• Strong computer skills and a good knowledge of a range of standard computer software, e.g., Microsoft Office, email;
• Knowledge of Python, R and/or other programming languages and their application to macroeconomic analysis;
• Good communication skills in order to deliver complex and clear information and messages, both oral and written;
• A strong team player who displays cross-cultural awareness to work effectively within a team;
• Ability to multi-task under pressure;
• Demonstrate a strong attention to detail.
