About the Division

The Student Wellbeing and Engagement Division is responsible for promoting and implementing regional and statewide consistency in areas relating to school services, student health, wellbeing, inclusion, and engagement supports. LOOKOUT centres situated within the division, were established in 2016 to address the educational disadvantage of children and young people in out-of-home care (OoHC) and raise the profile of the Out-of-Home Care Education Commitment.

LOOKOUT improves outcomes for children and young people in OoHC through capability building of school staff, leadership teams and stakeholders to understand children's needs and strategies to engage them and their carers to best support their education, strengthening relationships between the service systems (DE, Department of Families, Fairness and Housing and foster care agencies) and improving monitoring & reporting of children in care, ensuring that they can be tracked and identified within the system and prioritised for support.

LOOKOUT Learning Advisors are based in each LOOKOUT Centre to work within the multi-disciplinary team. They focus on improving learning and wellbeing outcomes for students in Out-of-Home Care (OoHC) through building capability of the relevant stakeholders on the implementation of the Partnering Agreement.

About the Role:

The purpose of the role is to build the capabilities of schools and case managers to:

uphold and promote the Partnering Agreement
understand trauma and how this presents in the education and care/ classroom settings and the impacts on children and young people in OoHC
support learning and wellbeing of children and young people in OoHC , including meeting and addressing the often-complex needs and barriers to engagement
build high expectations for educational outcomes for children and young people in OoHC and destigmatise OoHC within schools
draw on findings from Educational Need Analysis and develop high quality Individual Education Plans that reflect the needs, strengths and goals for students in OoHC
To challenge decisions to ensure they are in the best interests of the child
To provide time limited advocacy, referral and advice (including to carers) where without this intervention a child would not be connected to then support they need to engage in education.

Your capability to establish and maintain productive and collaborative relationships will be critical, as will the ability to deliver outcomes and influence change in a complex environment.

This is an excellent opportunity for the successful applicant to join and lead a team of committed professionals and undertake work that is challenging in nature but rewarding in the outcomes it delivers for vulnerable children and young people. The ideal candidate for this role will have in-depth understanding of the school system, experience in the sector and a passion for equity.

The successful applicant may negotiate to be based in any of the South East Victoria regional offices, but will be expected to travel across the SEV region with occasional overnight stays required.
