Overview
The Machine Shop Manager, reporting to the Director of Operations, leads the Machine Shop and CNC department with a focus on continuous improvement, production efficiency, and team development. This role ensures all tooling, materials, drawings, and programs are available to meet production schedules while actively removing bottlenecks and supporting hands-on problem solving to maintain quality and customer requirements. They oversees day-to-day workflow, sets performance targets, mentors staff, and conducts training, onboarding, and performance evaluations to build a skilled and self-reliant team. They uphold ISO 9001 processes, enforce Health and Safety standards, and maintain strong working relationships across fabrication, engineering, and management. Operating with minimal supervision, the Machine Shop Manager drives operational excellence, proactively addresses issues, and ensures the department consistently delivers timely, accurate, and high-quality output.
Responsibilities
Manage the machine shop and CNC department by continuously improving the overall process, following the MPS, ensure tooling, drawings, materials and programs are available when required and mentor employees with questions/concerns regarding the status of their work
Back-up or assist the machine shop and problem solving by identifying critical bottlenecks in the manufacturing phase and lend a helping hand to ensure customer requirements are not sacrificed
Working progressively in a team environment while respecting co-workers and work under ISO 9001 departmental processes and procedures
Work under minimal supervision to achieve desired results by reviewing the current situation, implementing company initiatives for continuous improvement and addressing areas of concern as they arise
Conduct Performance Reviews and Competency Evaluations to determine training needs for staff
Ability to meet manufacturing times schedules (actual vs. estimated)
Ability to multi-task several jobs and provide assembly with parts on-time
Issue NCRs and ECR’s as necessary
Conduct new employee orientation and training as per checklist during the employee’s first week on the job
Identify and provide training or other actions required to meet safety or competency requirements for staff
Ability to mentor fellow co-workers to instill knowledge and self-dependence
Organize resources and workflow to maximize efficiency
Set daily targets and ensure they are met
Motivate and mentor teams to achieve strategic goal
Bring critical issues or errors forward for resolution
Provide direction to Fabrication staff to instill knowledge and independence
Conduct monthly safety meetings with staff
Exchange information and knowledge on issues encountered
Present issues or opportunities for improvement to Supervisor
Participate and contribute to meetings relative to staffing levels based on projected workloads
Maintain positive and productive working relationships with management staff, shop workers, engineering and office staff
Be courteous and helpful when dealing with customers, suppliers and with co-workers
Resolve confrontations, disagreements and complaints in a constructive manner
Treat all employees consistently, fairly and with respect
Maintain knowledge of and follow the Occupational Health and Safety Act and policies as outlined in the Company Health and Safety Manual. Conduct monthly safety talks with department staff
Oversee the Health and Safety Program in area of responsibility by enforcing safety practices and disciplining employees in violation of the policies
Support and enforce compliance with all company rules and regulations as outlined in the Employee Handbook
Follow departmental processes required by ISO and actively participate in recommending improvements
Experience
Proven experience in manufacturing or machining environments with extensive knowledge of CNC machinery (laser cutting, lathe, milling).
Hands-on experience with CNC programming and setup is essential.
Skilled in operating cranes, forklifts, hand tools, and other mechanical equipment safely.
Strong understanding of blueprint reading, basic math skills for measurements and calculations, and quality inspection techniques.
Mechanical knowledge related to welding, assembly processes, and use of calipers is preferred.
Prior supervisory or managerial experience in a manufacturing setting is highly desirable.
