Distinguishing Features Of The Class
This position is responsible for a variety of maintenance and repair tasks. The incumbent generally works independently but may be assisted by semi-skilled laborers on large jobs and may assist a specialized tradesman in some complex technical repairs or installations. General supervision is received from an immediate supervisor. Direct supervision is exercised over assigned personnel. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative Only)
• Performs a variety of electrical, plumbing and heating repairs and installations;
• Performs a variety of carpentry, plastering, painting, masonry, roofing, tiling, locksmithing and other mechanical work;
• Maintains and cares for landscaped areas;
• Inspects buildings and grounds to determine the need for repairs;
• Makes estimates and requisitions materials;
• Reads utility meters and records readings;
• Operates and maintains snow removal equipment such as shovels, snow blowers etc.;
• Keeps daily time and materials records;
• Performs a variety of skilled labor tasks;
• Loads and unloads trucks;
• Drives a vehicle for delivery and pick up of supplies and equipment;
• Cleans and mops spills as needed;
• Performs minor maintenance and repairs to department vehicles, including but not limited to pumping gas, checking and adding oil and other fluids, checking and adding air, changing tires and cleaning the inside and outside vehicles.
Full Performance Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And Personal Characteristics
• Good knowledge of the work practices, tools, terminology, and accident precautions of a variety of building trades;
• Ability to make a variety of building repairs;
• Ability to work from plans and specifications and to follow rough sketches;
• Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions;
• Ability to plan and supervise the work of others;
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships;
• Ability to prepare simple records and reports;
• Dependability; initiative; good judgment; thoroughness; neat appearance;
• Physical condition commensurate with the demand of the position.
MAINTENANCE MECHANIC MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: EITHER
• Graduation from high school or possession of a High School Equivalency Diploma and one
• year of experience at a journey level in one of the skilled building trades; or
• Three (3) years of experience in either general building construction or maintenance work; or
• An equivalent combination of education/training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).
Special Requirement
Municipal Housing Authority
Possession of a valid New York State Class E Driver's License.
City of Yonkers and Board of Education
Possession of a valid New York State Class D Driver's License.
