We’re looking for an Experienced Operator with solid maintenance or construction experience in Sealed and Unsealed pavement works to join our Waihōpai Alliance Maintenance team in Invercargill. You’ll play a key role in the construction, repair and maintenance of our network, operating plant and equipment and helping us deliver safe, well-presented assets for our communities.

This is a hands-on, outdoor role suited to someone who enjoys practical work and takes pride in high-quality finishes. You’ll work as part of a small crew focusing on a variety of works, including (but not limited to):
Renewal or Repairs of:
Footpaths
Kerb and Channel
Vehicle Crossings
Sumps/Culverts
Berms
Pavement Repairs such as:
Digouts
Rip and Remakes
Low/High Shoulders
You’ll be leading or supporting day-to-day site operations (depending on your experience), including setting out, forming, pouring and finishing, as well as reinstating surrounding areas. The work is varied and can either be programme-based or seasonal, and high quality is what should motivate you. You’ll be an important part of keeping our network safe and looking great for residents.
Ngā kawenga matua - Key responsibilities
Deliver high-quality construction and maintenance works on all works given to you to complete
Operate a range of plant, tools and equipment such as excavators, compactors, concrete cutting gear and small rollers, in line with training, licences and safety requirements
Carry out formwork, boxing, concrete placement and finishing, and small asphalt reinstatement works
Assist with site set-up, levels, drainage connections and reinstatement of surrounding areas (topsoil, grassing, etc.)
Complete routine inspections of work areas, identify defects and plan appropriate repairs
Undertake basic plant and equipment checks and report defects, faults or hazards
Support traffic management and site safety to keep crew and public safe
Participate in emergency and after-hours callouts on a rostered basis, when required

A strong safety-first mindset and commitment to doing the job right the first time
Proven experience in civil construction or maintenance, ideally with:
Footpath and/or shared path construction and repair
Kerb and channel installation
Driveway and vehicle crossing construction
Concrete and/or asphalt work, including finishing
Maintenance pavement repairs
Practical skills and the ability to carry out physical, outdoor work in all conditions
A positive, reliable attitude and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team
A willingness to bring the team with you, learn together, grow together
Confidence operating small to medium civil plant and hand tools
Full Class 2 driver licence (WTR endorsements preferred)
Traffic management experience or TC/STMS qualifications an advantage, but not essential
Flexibility to participate in after-hours callouts when required
