Great opportunity to lead a committed and passionate Communications team

Your role

This role manages the Aboriginal Housing Office (AHO) Communications team to coordinate communications activities that align with our strategic objectives. This includes the development and implementation of creative external and internal communications.

The Aboriginal Housing Office (AHO) is a statutory body established under the Aboriginal Housing Act 1998 (NSW) to ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have access to affordable, quality housing.

Our team shares stories of the AHO’s far-reaching positive impact in community – in housing and beyond. Our Communications function aims to educate, inform and inspire people about AHO's services and in doing so reflect the strength of Aboriginal culture.

To drive alignment to AHO strategy, the AHO’s five overarching communications objectives are to:

Increase awareness of AHO’s services, programs and impact
Support improved access to services by providing clear, culturally safe information
Empower people and showcase positive outcomes – strength, not stigma in accessing our services
Celebrate culture and partnerships through storytelling and community voices
Strengthen AHO’s reputation as a trusted, effective organisation

These goals align with the AHO’s vision and Strong Family, Strong Communities strategy.

What you’ll do

Manage the Communications team in the development and implementation of strategic communication plans to support key AHO programs, announcements, and organisational priorities.
Manage internal and external communication channels, including digital platforms such as AHO website, AHO social media and internal channels.
Provide high‑level advice to executives, managers, and project teams on communication risks, issues, and opportunities.
Produce written content including key messages, briefs, speeches, newsletters, web content, and stakeholder updates.
Manage the application of AHO branding to ensure it reflects the AHO’s position as a trusted and respected organisation.
Ensure all AHO Communications adhere to relevant style guides and meet all accessibility standards.
Oversee the creation of culturally respectful and accessible communication materials.
Work with the team to manage proactive content planning to ensure good news stories are created, approved and shared in a timely manner.
Manage a high-performing team who is committed to delivering impactful communications to Aboriginal audiences across NSW.
Assist Homes NSW media team in the coordination and management of media responses to emerging issues and media enquiries.
Build strong relationships with internal teams, government partners, and Aboriginal stakeholders to ensure communication activities are respectful of audience preferences.

What we’re looking for

Strong strategic thinking with the ability to develop and deliver communication strategies aligned to organisational priorities
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience producing high quality content across a range of channels
Demonstrated ability to provide high level, trusted advice to senior executives and influence decision making
Experience managing digital communications, including websites, social media and multi-channel delivery
Strong understanding of culturally appropriate and inclusive communication practices, particularly when engaging with Aboriginal communities
Proven leadership capability, with experience building, developing and motivating high performing teams
