About The Role
We are looking for an experienced Engineering Manager with major project experience who is able to leverage their hard earned project delivery experience to support RT Projects’ global portfolio. The role is accountable for the engineering function for RT Projects, including management of a team of highly experienced discipline engineers and engineering risk specialists, provision of engineering advice and engineering management expertise to project teams, oversight of the RT Projects engineering framework for delivering major projects, providing assurance reviews of the engineering function on projects and engagement with key stakeholders.

Reporting to the General Manager Engineering Projects, this role is responsible for
Leading key engineering stakeholder engagements for each project to provide advice and responses to engineering matters and/or project management of the engineering function. This includes growth and closure projects in either study or execution phases with stakeholders ranging from project owners’ teams, product group operations, engineering service providers and contractors performing construction work.
Providing engineering management instructions to projects based on RT Projects’ engineering delivery framework for which this role is the custodian to manage. The framework has interfaces with other project functions such as Project Controls, Contracts and Procurement, Project Data Management, Digital Delivery and Operational Readiness.
Managing the Safety and Risk Engineering function with the clear mandate to deliver safe assets. This includes managing a team of engineering risk subject matter experts along with RT Projects’ safety and risk engineering requirements that are aligned with Rio Tinto’s global corporate HSE requirements.
Direct and manage targeted engineering assurance activities to ensure engineering is delivered within the guidelines of RT Project’s engineering framework and standards, enabling early identification of performance or process gaps and development of mitigation plans in conjunction with the project team to ensure alignment.
What You Will Bring
A bachelor’s degree in engineering.
Project experience as a senior engineering leader with a demonstrated track record of displaying innovative strategic planning and engineering problem solving capability across a broad portfolio of extractive industry projects.
Strong organisational and communication skills with an ability to influence key stakeholders and maintain a network of contacts across a global portfolio.
Large scale project experience managing the associated engineering effort during design, construction and commissioning including strong focus on measuring engineering performance – cost, quality and schedule.
A flexible approach that reflects the global nature of RT Projects’ portfolio of projects - the role will require domestic and international travel.
It will also be beneficial if you have
Completed further studies in engineering or business administration.
Project experience that has involved bulk materials handling, mineral processing, underground and/or open pit mine construction and operations.
Exposure to other project functions and a clear understanding of their role within a mega project ie Project Controls, Contracts and Procurement, Estimating, Scheduling, Risk, Construction, Operational Readiness and Data Management.

Rio Tinto Projects helps to grow our business by building new mines and assets as well as studying the different options for both new construction projects and operations approaching closure. We are recognised for delivering safely, on time and on budget or better and have won multiple awards for our work, including at the Amrun Bauxite mine in North Queensland, Australia and on the AutoHaul™ driverless trains in the Pilbara, Western Australia.
The role can be based in either Perth or Brisbane. We offer a flexible working arrangement with a balance of office-based and work from home. There is also an ongoing requirement for additional hours outside the standard working day to support colleagues in alternative time zones.
