An exciting opportunity has arisen within NSW Fair Trading for a Manager, Governance and Assurance, within the Governance, Assurance and Performance Branch.

Be Part of the Future of Fair Trading
NSW Fair Trading is working to ensure safe marketplaces for goods, services and homes across New South Wales.
At NSW Fair Trading, we’ve been on an exciting journey of transformation - reimagining how we deliver for the people and communities of NSW. Through our recent organizational realignment, we’ve built a new operating model designed to put customers at the centre of everything we do, strengthen our regulatory impact, and enable our people to thrive.
We’re creating a more modern, responsive and risk‑based Fair Trading - one that understands the needs of people and businesses, embraces collaboration and innovation, and delivers better outcomes across the rental, strata, property and consumer markets we serve.
This next phase brings new and exciting opportunities to join us in shaping the new way - where you can help design smarter regulation, improve customer experiences, and make a real difference for the people of NSW.
If you’re someone who:
Thinks deeply about the needs of people and communities
Is motivated by great outcomes, not just processes
Wants to be part of an organization that’s transforming how consumer protection regulation works
…then there’s a place for you in our future.
Join us as we build a Fair Trading that’s fit for the future - one that’s customer‑centred, evidence‑driven, and proudly focused on public value.

About the Role
As Manager, Governance and Assurance, you will lead the design, delivery and continuous improvement of governance and assurance across Fair Trading, ensuring the organisation operates with strong integrity, transparency and risk discipline.
This is not an assurance role that sits on the sidelines. You will work at the heart of decision‑making - embedding fit‑for‑purpose governance, driving high‑quality risk and compliance practices, and providing trusted, practical advice to senior leaders on how to navigate complexity, uncertainty and regulatory obligation.
You will be accountable for translating governance frameworks into real, operational discipline - shaping how risks are identified, managed and escalated; how assurance is planned and delivered; how compliance obligations are embedded into daily business; and how assurance insights are used to strengthen performance, not just satisfy requirements.
Success in this role means lifting capability, maturity and confidence across Fair Trading- so governance and assurance are seen as enablers of good outcomes, not barriers to delivery.

About the Team
The Governance, Assurance and Performance team plays a critical role in enabling Fair Trading to deliver confidently, responsibly and with impact.
The team partners closely with executive leadership, business units and corporate functions to provide end‑to‑end governance and assurance support - spanning risk management, compliance, business continuity, assurance planning, internal audit coordination, and governance reporting.
This is a high‑trust, high‑impact team made up of experienced professionals who combine technical expertise with strong judgement, commercial awareness and an ability to work constructively with the business. The team’s focus is practical, proportionate governance - supporting leaders to make informed decisions, manage risk intelligently and respond effectively when things change.
As Manager, you will lead and develop the team to operate as trusted advisers and hands‑on practitioners, strengthening both organisational resilience and delivery confidence.

Your Responsibilities Will Include
Lead and embed enterprise‑grade governance and assurance practices, ensuring frameworks, policies and processes are practical, current and aligned to organisational strategy and risk appetite.
Provide expert, authoritative advice to senior leaders on governance, risk, compliance, business continuity and assurance - including emerging risks and complex or sensitive issues.
Design and deliver risk management practices that go beyond registers - facilitating meaningful risk identification, quality controls, effective escalation and real‑world mitigation.
Develop and oversee assurance planning, including internal assurance activities and coordination with internal audit, ensuring assurance effort is targeted, risk‑based and value‑adding.
Drive compliance management across the division, including obligations mapping, attestation processes and support to ensure compliance is embedded - not purely reported.
Partner with business units to strengthen decision‑making, using governance insights, data and assurance findings to inform priorities, improvements and corrective action.
Identify and lead governance improvement initiatives, translating issues and insights into clear actions that lift maturity and operational resilience.
Build governance and assurance capability across Fair Trading, coaching leaders and teams to confidently “own” their risks, controls and accountabilities.
Lead, develop and inspire a high‑performing team, setting clear expectations, fostering professional excellence and maintaining a strong culture of integrity, curiosity and accountability.

About You
You are a seasoned governance and assurance professional who has done the work - not just designed frameworks, but made them operate in complex, real‑world environments.
You bring deep, hands‑on experience across the full governance and assurance lifecycle, including risk management, compliance, assurance planning, audit engagement, business continuity and executive reporting. You understand how these elements fit together - and how to apply them proportionately in a fast‑moving regulatory and operational context.
You are known for your judgement, credibility and ability to cut through complexity. Senior leaders trust you because your advice is balanced, practical and grounded in understanding how the business actually operates. You know when to hold the line on governance - and when to help teams find a better way to meet intent without unnecessary burden.
As a leader, you develop experts - building capability, confidence and critical thinking in your team. You model integrity, constructive challenge and calm decision‑making, even in ambiguity or pressure.
Importantly, you believe governance and assurance should enable better outcomes, not slow them down - and you have the experience, confidence and maturity to make that real.
