Job Purpose and Summary:

As a member of the leadership team, the Manager, Hospital Billing is responsible for supporting the development of a high performing team within Financial Services, ensuring the delivery of excellent customer service and patient experience, and ensuring efficient, accurate, and timely hospital billing and accounts receivable processes resulting in optimized operations. They will engage with the billing and accounts receivable team members to ensure the integrity of the billing and accounts receivable processes, will build the team’s knowledge and application of the systems, critically assess the operations on an ongoing basis, identify and implement changes that are thoughtfully planned to make the best use of people, tools and financial resources. They will work collaboratively with Clinical Operations, Medical Affairs, Patient Registration and Preferred Accommodation teams, Patient Experience office, Health Information and Informatics, and other internal and external partners to enhance THP patient’s experience with the hospital billing and accounts receivable processes.

The Manager, Hospital Billing will proactively create effective relationships with teams, leaders and external partners to understand operational interdependencies and evolving business requirements. They will use their in-depth billing and accounts receivable knowledge, critical thinking skills, problem solving expertise, analytical skills, their “big picture” perspective and strong peoples leadership experience to articulate compelling departmental objectives. They will formalize departmental deliverables, organize workload, and coordinate and guide the hospital billing and accounts receivables team in task planning, execution, and success measurement. They will report on the status of the departmental objectives and new opportunities and risks effectively, and will enhance the standard operating procedures in a collaborative and integrated manner.

Key Areas of Focus:

Ensuring a highly effective, result-oriented Hospital Billing function with focus on exemplary patient experience

Providing engaged and supportive leadership to a diverse team while ensuring the effective and efficient resourcing of operations

Establishing, monitoring and reporting department-specific objectives; development of measurements, benchmarks and performance indicators aimed to measure efficiencies and identify opportunities across the billing and accounts receivable cycles. On-going evaluation and evolution of the hospital billing and accounts receivable operations

Leading and coordination of project initiatives aimed at the optimization of hospital billing and accounts receivable processes of the organization, including reporting on progress and establishing mechanisms in place to monitor and sustain the change

Managing risk, assessing internal controls and identifying exposures, and putting in place mitigating strategies and ongoing monitoring

Innovative approaches to revenue management and growth

Key supporting role in the planning and execution of the monthly financial close cycle and the annual external financial audit of the organization

Leadership support direction and training to direct and indirect reports

Fostering a culture of innovative thinking with focus on operational excellence and positive customer experience

Specific Accountabilities:

Provide effective, efficient and quality services through effective management of staff, facilities and financial resources

Provide leadership to the hospital billing and accounts receivable team of approximately 20 staff

Ensure compliance to the Hospital Insurance Act and other relevant laws and regulations

Develop and maintain policies procedures aimed at administrative excellence and exemplary patient experience

Manage staff development by coaching and mentoring as well as identifying, supporting and facilitating staff and team learning opportunities

Develop, plan and implement entrepreneurial and innovative ideas that enhance service delivery, cost effectiveness and support strategic initiatives and customer experience

Key supporting role to the Manager, General Accounting in the month end close, account reconciliations and the annual external audit

Assess and maintain strong internal controls in hospital billing and accounts receivable processes, with focus on system- based controls and mitigations.

Key Qualifications:

Undergraduate degree in Business Administration or a related field

Thorough understanding of regulations/legislation relating to hospital billing and accounts receivable operations (e.g. Hospital Insurance Act)

A recognized accounting designation (preferable)

3-5 years progressive leadership experience in billing and receivables with a notable track record of success

Strong relationship building and team leadership skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with various stakeholders in a complex, multi-stakeholder environment, including Senior Leadership, clinical and physician leadership, and leaders of other enabling services such as Registration, Patient Experience and Health Information and Informatics.

Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills combined with critical thinking and a customer–focused mindset

An engaged leader with excellent people management skills able to develop and inspire a diverse team of high performers, supporting their learning and growth, and troubleshooting in a collaborative manner to eliminate barriers and optimize operational processes

Strategic conceptual thinker with the ability to integrate “big picture” thinking into operations

Sound business judgement and excellent analytical and organizational skills with attention to detail

Computer skills, including MS Teams, MS Outlook, MS Office – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet based programs

Working knowledge of Epic Hospital Billing and Meditech Billing and Accounts Receivable systems preferred.
