Primary objective
Manage the Remote Sensing Unit within the Land Resources Division to provide contemporary remote sensing technology and
services to internal and external clients. As the manager of the Remote Sensing team, you will provide technical leadership and
support to the High Performance Computer initiative, and the satellite and field-based monitoring programs that assess, monitor
and report on land condition and vegetation change in the Northern Territory.

Context statement
The Remote Sensing Unit is responsible for the management, dissemination and use of remotely sensed data and critical
infrastructure and systems for a range of scientific monitoring programs. This includes the High Performance Computer and key
components of the integrated Rangeland Monitoring Program across the pastoral estate of the NT, the Darwin Harbour
Mangrove Monitoring Program and the Territory Vegetation Extent Analysis program.

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Manage a team of remote sensing professionals to deliver desktop and field-based integrated monitoring programs and

remote sensing analysis.
2. Provide scientific advice on the changing condition of land and vegetation to inform natural resource management decisions.
3. Develop and maintain effective internal and external stakeholder relationships in areas of land resource management and

remote sensing.
4. Deliver highly objective remotely based monitoring systems, integrated with field-based data, that enables effective

assessment and reporting of land condition to government, stakeholders and the public.
5. Investigate and develop systems infrastructure and remote sensing data products for the department that assist management

and sustainable development of the NT’s resources.
6. Align remote sensing programs with agency business plans, while ensuring compliance with scientific standards.
7. Assist with the compilation of evidence and field-based data collection where required for compliance matters.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. Tertiary degree in remote sensing, computer science, Information Technology (IT), Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or

equivalent.
2. Demonstrated experience in assessing landscape processes and monitoring health of natural resources using remote and

ground based methods.
3. Demonstrated interpersonal and organisational skills with the proven capability to lead a diverse team to achieve results.
4. Demonstrated ability to network and communicate effectively with clients from diverse backgrounds, including high level

written, verbal and interpersonal skills.
5. Highly developed analytical skills and ability to present complex issues clearly and logically both orally and in written form.
6. Detailed knowledge and experience in the use of open source Python software and Geographic Information Systems for

remote sensing and image analysis applications in natural resource management.
7. Current NT driver licence.

Desirable
1. Postgraduate qualification in remote sensing or similar.
2. Knowledge of NT natural resources, legislation and associated issues related to pastoral land, native vegetation and

mangroves.
3. Working knowledge of Git, code management, containerisation and high performance computing.
