The Opportunity
The Marine Safety Officer is accountable to the Unit Manager, Marine Compliance for state-wide water-based and land-based patrols, to assess compliance with boating legislation and relevant Codes of Practice.

The role is to ensure vessels are safe and compliant with relevant legislation, undertaking education, enforcement, and deterrent action when non-compliant breaches occur. Responsibilities include community engagement, detecting non-compliance and the coordination of timely and effective investigations into reported incidents.

The Marine Safety Officer contributes to the development of strategic and operational initiatives that provide for the safe use of South Australian waters for recreational and other aquatic activities and is involved with preparing for and responding to marine pollution events.

The incumbent should have relevant knowledge of boating safety principles, experience in interpreting legislation, and comprehensive knowledge of government policy, procedures and administrative law processes, including investigation techniques, compiling prosecution briefs of evidence.

Qualifications/Experience
Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal Certificate of Competency.

A current driver's licence is essential.

A current first aid certificate, forklift licence, and Heavy Vehicle licence will be considered favourably.

Special Conditions
Prior to employment with the Department the successful candidate will be required to provide:

A National Police Check (NPC) which must be renewed every three years.
A Department for Human Services (DHS) Working with Children Check (WWCC) which is required to be renewed every five years before expiry.
Normal hours of duty will be 150 hours to be worked over a four (4) week period including a minimum of 26 weekends (26 Saturdays and 26 Sundays) and six (6) public holidays per year for which penalty rates will apply.

Agency uniform to be worn as required.

Must be suitable to be appointed as an Authorised Officer under relevant State and Commonwealth Acts.

In the event of an emergency, any staff member of Marine Services may be required to assist in response and recovery activities. This may potentially include long hours and challenging work conditions.

Roles may be required to work at various locations within the State.

Some out of hours and weekend work, along with some intra/interstate travel requiring overnight stays, may be required.
