Materials Manager
Role Overview: The Materials Manager is a key member of Perri’s Corporation (“Perri’s”) operations team, responsible for overseeing all materials planning, procurement, inventory control, and logistics functions to support the production of Perri’s products. In this role, you would ensure that the supply chain operates smoothly and efficiently to meet production schedules and quality standards. The position involves strategic coordination with various departments (production, quality, etc.) to forecast material needs and deliver products on time to Perri’s customers. The ideal candidate is an experienced supply chain professional who is detail-oriented, analytical, and able to lead a team in a fast-paced, mission-critical manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
Materials Planning & Inventory Management: Oversee and manage inventory control, material planning, and production scheduling processes to ensure on-time delivery of parts and materials for manufacturing demands. Maintain optimum inventory levels by forecasting needs and replenishing stock to meet production requirements while avoiding shortages or excess. Investigate and resolve any inventory discrepancies promptly.
Procurement & Supplier Management: Determine supply needs based on production forecasts and coordinate the timely purchasing of raw materials, components, and supplies in line with specifications and demand. Maintain strong relationships with suppliers and negotiate contracts to secure best-value terms for quality, price, and delivery. Continuously explore new potential suppliers, materials, or processes to improve quality, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.
Logistics & Warehousing: Coordinate and supervise receiving, warehousing, and distribution operations. Ensure all incoming materials are received and stored properly, and establish efficient procedures for material handling to production. Oversee outbound logistics as needed, making sure finished goods or components are shipped on schedule. You will also establish procedures and oversee the annual physical inventory counts to verify stock accuracy.
Cross-Functional Coordination: Work closely with production and product management teams to align material availability with production schedules and new product introduction. Analyze product demand, sales forecasts, and change orders in collaboration with other managers to adjust supply plans accordingly. Interface with program or project managers on planning and forecasting of customer orders to ensure shipment commitments can be met.
Team Leadership: Lead, mentor, and manage the materials and logistics team (e.g. buyers, planners, warehouse staff) to achieve department objectives. Provide coaching and performance feedback to staff, and ensure training on processes and safety. Foster a culture of continuous improvement, strong communication, and accountability within the team.
Continuous Improvement & Compliance: Develop and implement process improvements to optimize inventory turns, reduce lead times, and enhance overall supply chain efficiency. Analyze monthly materials activities and adjust forecasts or processes as needed to improve results. The Materials Manager must also enforce that Perri’s standard procedures are followed in all materials functions. Any potential issues affecting supply chain or production are to be proactively identified and addressed.
Qualifications and Requirements
Education: Bachelor’s degree in supply chain management, logistics, business, or a related field is required (or equivalent experience).
Experience: A minimum of 5+ years of experience in materials management, supply chain, or inventory control roles (with at least a few years in a supervisory/managerial capacity). Proven success in managing inventory for production and supporting new product launches is ideal.
Technical Skills: Proficiency with ERP/MRP systems and inventory management software. Solid understanding of forecasting techniques and budgeting for materials planning is expected. The candidate should be comfortable analyzing demand data and adjusting plans accordingly. Knowledge of lean manufacturing or Just-in-Time principles and experience implementing process improvements in a supply chain context are valuable.
Leadership & Soft Skills: Excellent organizational and leadership skills are required. The Materials Manager must be able to lead a team effectively, delegate tasks, and coordinate cross-functionally. Strong communication and interpersonal abilities are needed to work with suppliers and internal stakeholders. A customer-focused mindset (understanding the impact of materials availability on customer deliveries) is important. The role also requires an analytical mindset and problem-solving skills to address supply chain challenges and optimize operations.
Certifications: Professional certifications are not mandatory but highly valued. Accreditation such as APICS Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) or Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP), or a Six Sigma Green Belt / Black Belt, or ISM Certified Professional in Supply Management (CPSM) would be considered a strong asset. These indicate a commitment to continuous improvement and advanced supply chain knowledge.
