KENOSHA COUNTY WILL PAY FOR CLASS "A" CDL TRAINING!

Kenosha County is looking for a full-time Mechanic responsible for professional repairs and maintenance of all aspects to a fleet of trucks and all equipment used by the Kenosha County Highway Division performed to factory quality or better. In addition, the Mechanic will repair buildings and yards as needed. Education and experience will determine Mechanic I or Mechanic II.

Under general supervision of the Shop Superintendent, the Mechanic performs a wide variety of skilled mechanical repair, diagnostic and maintenance work all types of large trucks, automotive equipment, including heavy equipment, such as but not limited to tractor trailers, front end loaders, bulldozers, sweepers, rollers, paving machines, etc. and various tools and contractor's equipment. Mechanic II may be required to supervise general mechanics in their daily duties.

Mechanic I Hiring Range: $31.1+ - $35.44 per hour

Mechanic II Hiring Range: $33.53 - $38.10 per hour

Work Schedule
• Standard work week is currently Monday through Thursday from 6:00 AM to 4:00 PM
• May be assigned to work second shift (3:30 PM to 12:00 midnight) from mid-November to mid-April, with a shift premium of $1.00
• Required to work overtime on an as-needed basis
• Work hours are determined by the workload and weather and are subject to change

Position Summary and Job Duties
• Analyzes all types of vehicles and equipment for need of repairs; analysis may involve diagnostic computer software for vehicle engine, transmission, and anti-lock brake systems
• Performs repairs on all types of engines
• Performs repairs to drive train, electrical and hydraulic systems, and all other systems on vehicles and equipment
• Performs routine maintenance of all types on vehicles and equipment
• Welds and fabricates on vehicles and equipment
• Performs repairs on various pieces of small equipment
• Repairs tires and tubes
• Paints vehicles and equipment
• Makes service calls; repairs vehicles and equipment broken down while in service
• Determines operational status of equipment or immediate placing of equipment out of service
• Identifies parts, materials, and supplies to be ordered to complete maintenance and repairs
• Performs other duties as required or assigned, which may include plowing and salting highways or any general activities involved in the maintenance of highways

Success Factors
• Knowledge of all major mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems found on larger trucks
• Knowledge of welding and fabricating
• Knowledge of safety precautions and procedures applicable to maintenance shops and mechanical equipment
• Knowledge of diesel engines and associated electronic control systems
• Skill in the use of tools and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of all types of internal combustion engines, components, and associated equipment
• Skill in recognizing, diagnosing, and performing repairs and maintenance on all types of engines, components, and systems on vehicles and equipment
• Skill in the use of computerized diagnostic tools
• Skill in metal fabrication and welding
• Ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical co-workers, customers, and supervisors
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions
• Ability to work independently and efficiently to meet deadlines
• Ability to work well with others
• Ability to use good judgment
• Ability to work respectfully in a diverse and inclusive environment

Job Requirements, Education, Training and Experience
• High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
• Mechanic I = 3 years of additional training in gasoline and diesel engine repair; or any combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
• Mechanic II = Minimum 5 years of experience with heavy equipment repair work, or equivalent combination of training and certifications may be considered; or an Associate degree in auto mechanics, automotive technology, diesel equipment technology, or related field may be substituted for 5 years of work experience.

Licenses or Certifications
• Must possess a valid Class D driver's license.
• If not a current CDL holder, must obtain Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) by first day of hire; and must obtain a Class A CDL with air brake, tanker, and manual transmission endorsements within one year of service; at the expense of the Kenosha County Division of Highways.
• Must provide copies of any training certificates earned relating to diesel mechanics, hydraulic systems, or other major mechanical components.
• Valid Class A CDL with air brake, tanker, and manual transmission endorsements preferred.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

The position requires a full range of physical movement - bending, reaching, lifting, etc. and heavy physical demands such as exerting more than 100 pounds of force occasionally and between 50-100 pounds of force occasionally. Work involves stooping, kneeling, crouching, twisting, turning, and reaching; bending at the waist. Indoor and outdoor work environment with exposure to weather extremes. Must be able to work outside in any weather conditions, including temperature extremes.
