Mechanical Engineer – Job Description
Location: San Bruno, CA | Full-time | Minimum 3 Days Onsite

Mission
The mission for this Mechanical Engineer role is to support improvements to Empo Health’s first-generation motor-driven diagnostic scanner through cost reduction and rework implementation, while also helping develop scalable designs for future product generations.

Outcomes (Next 12 Months)
Support cost-down and design-for-manufacturing improvements for the current generation product.

Contribute to mechanical rework strategies based on field feedback and internal testing.

Develop and release robust mechanical designs in CAD with appropriate documentation and properly toleranced drawings.

Improve production fixturing and test processes through design and documentation updates.

Design components and assemblies suited for high-volume production methods, including injection-molded plastics, sheet metal, and machined parts.

Collaborate cross-functionally to originate and execute verification and validation test plans.

Travel as needed to our contract manufacturer in Fremont to support builds and design transfers.

Work closely with the engineering team to influence product quality, reliability, and manufacturability.

Role-Specific Competencies
A mid-level mechanical engineer with 4–6 years of relevant experience.

Proficient in 3D CAD with skills equivalent to Onshape; direct Onshape experience is a plus.

Experienced in high-volume production design, especially injection-molded plastics, sheet metal, and machined part design.

Experience designing fixtures to aid in the assembly, calibration, and/or testing of hardware products is a plus.

Familiar with mechatronic systems, including motor assemblies and sensor integration.

Able to release production-ready drawings with classic and GD&T tolerancing applied as necessary.

Experienced in supporting sustaining engineering, ECOs, and field-driven design changes.

Thoughtful and creative in developing functional and reliability test strategies.

Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and wearing multiple hats.

Available to work onsite in San Bruno at least 3 days/week and travel occasionally to Fremont, CA.

Job Description
Empo Health is a seed-funded, NSF-supported medical device startup developing in-home diagnostic tools that expand access to preventive care. We are hiring a Mechanical Engineer to lead and support cost reduction, design improvement, and sustaining efforts for our first commercially released product, while helping lay the foundation for future-generation products.

Our first product, the Empo Footprint, is a smart scale that scans the bottom of the feet to detect early signs of diabetic foot ulcers. The ideal candidate for this role has experience designing for high-volume production, with expertise in plastics, sheet metal, and machined part design, and has contributed to post-launch improvements or product scaling in a fast-paced team.

This is a mid-level role that is hands-on and embedded in a small, agile hardware team. You’ll work closely with cross-functional partners and contribute directly to both short-term updates and long-term design strategy.

In this role, you will:
Execute design updates focused on cost reduction, reliability, and manufacturability.

Develop and release mechanical designs and documentation using Onshape or equivalent CAD tools.

Apply DFM/DFA and GD&T principles across injection-molded, sheet metal, and machined components.

Originate and execute design verification and validation test plans, or work closely with others to support them.

Assist with sustaining engineering tasks such as field failure investigations, ECOs, and product documentation updates.

Interface with our contract manufacturer in Fremont, including occasional onsite support for builds and issue resolution.

Be a core member of a small team shaping both current and next-generation hardware.

You might be a good fit if you:
Have 4–6 years of mechanical engineering experience focused on consumer or medical devices.

Have experience releasing products into high-volume production, including plastics and sheet metal.

Can confidently apply CAD (Onshape preferred) and release manufacturing-ready drawings with GD&T.

Have worked on systems involving motors, actuators, or sensors (mechatronics experience).

Can contribute meaningfully to validation planning, root cause analysis, and test fixture design.

Have supported high-volume production and understand the need to balance performance, cost, and manufacturability.

Are comfortable working onsite at least 3 days/week in San Bruno, with occasional travel to Fremont.

Are excited to contribute to both sustaining efforts and new product development.

Nice to Have
Experience developing or improving test protocols or fixtures

Background in DOE (design of experiments) for hardware validation

Exposure to medical device QMS (ISO 13485, FDA QSR, IEC 60601)

Experience with PLM tools like Duro, Arena, or Propel

Basic scripting or automation experience (e.g. for test automation, not required)
