The Service Provider and Edge Business Unit (SEBU) focuses on helping Communications Service Providers (CSPs) modernize their networks across the core, edge, and Radio Access Network (RAN). This is made possible by the VMware Telco Cloud portfolio of products. The portfolio enables CSPs to run, manage, and deliver network functions – including virtualized and containerized network functions – on a software stack that is agile, performant, and secure.
This position is for a mid-level software developer in the Telco Foundation development team. The team’s charter is to provide foundation services for Telco Cloud products, including VMware Telco Cloud Operations and VMware Centralized and Distributed Radio Access Network (RAN) Intelligent Controllers (cRIC and dRIC). This includes responsibility for common deployment, administration, streaming, and data store services. The system features a modern, cloud-native, microservice architecture, with individual services implemented in Java, Go, Python, and TypeScript. Open source software solutions are used extensively; key technologies used include Docker, Kubernetes, Carvel tools, Helm, Kafka, Flink, HDFS, and Postgres.
In short, you will be working with the latest tools and technologies, with a high-performing distributed team.
Success in the Role: What are the performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?
• Short-term (1-3 months)
• Establish development and test environments
• Understand and be able to build and deploy at least one product built on the SEBU Telco foundation
• Be familiar with tools (JIRA, Confluence, Slack) and development processes, including those for design, coding and testing
• Identify key personnel in the team and know who to go to when you have questions
• Have committed code to resolve a few defects or small features, with guidance from senior team members
• Medium-term (3-6 months)
• Participate in a complete product release cycle
• Help drive a small project to completion, from requirements definition and refinement, through estimation, coding, and testing, to delivery
• Actively participate in release and sprint planning activities
• Identify areas of potential specialization
• Long-term (6-12 months)
• Become expert in a particular service
• Have resolved moderately complex problems with minimal supervision
• Help drive a substantial project to completion, in cooperation with senior development staff, from requirements, through estimation, coding and testing, to delivery
• Have established working relationships with senior development staff
The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?
Key responsibilities include:
• Maintenance of existing features
• Analysing feature requirements, and preparing functional specifications and designs to meet them
• Scoping and preparing estimates for new features, and actively contributing to the release planning process
• Implementing new features in a carrier-grade, scalable software platform
• Implementing and maintaining test automation suites
• Collaborating with system architects, management, and peers to drive projects to completion
• Preparing documentation and training materials
Skills, qualifications, and experience required:
• Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related discipline; advanced degree preferred
• 5 to + years of experience in software architecture, design, and development
• Extensive experience with UNIX/Linux system management and software development
• Proficient in Java and Go
• Proficient with shell scripting and at least one scripting language such as Python or Groovy
• Significant experience in Rest services
• Experience in data structure and algorithm
• Experience working with at least one stream processing platform such as Kafka , Flink or Spark
• Knowledge of one or more relational database management system, such as Postgres or Oracle
• Experience of one of more no-SQL databases, such as Cassandra, MongoDB, or ElasticSearch
• Experience with microservice architectures, Docker, Kubernetes, and one or more public cloud platforms such as AWS or Microsoft Azure
• Direct experience building and deploying enterprise-grade microservices
• Experience with virtualized infrastructure such as VMware ESXi, vCenter and vCloud Director would be a plus
• Knowledge of log aggregation tools such as Kibana
• Knowledge of monitoring and alerting tools such as Prometheus
• Strong problem solving and debugging skills
• Highly motivated team player
• Excellent communication and presentation skills
• Comfortable working with a distributed, fully remote team

Where is this role located?
Fixed: this role is based out of VMware’s Bangalore, India office and open to candidates in the surrounding area. You will be expected to live within a reasonable non-daily commute of the office.
