Established in 1++2, we’re committed to securing quality health care services across the East Arnhem and enabling Yolŋu powered community health and wellbeing. Miwatj provides culturally appropriate, comprehensive primary health care to over 6,000 remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents across 3 East Arnhem wards. With a Head Office in Nhulunbuy, Miwatj also manages a Corporate Office in Darwin, 7 fixed clinics across the East Arnhem region, and dedicated outreach teams who travel to 3 additional locations.

The Role
The Mental Health Remote Area Nurse is responsible for providing integrated, culturally responsive, and safe mental health services to meet the Mental Health and Social and Emotional Well-Being (MHSEWB) needs of the Galiwin’ku Community and surrounding Homelands. The position leads and monitors the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based care for individuals with diagnosed mental illnesses and co-morbid chronic conditions. With a focus on Primary Health Care (PHC) and outreach, the role implements Stepped-Care services and is embedded in the PHC service model to promote holistic health care solutions for clients
Key Responsibilities but not limited to,
Engage with individuals, families and local governance structures to promote uptake of culturally adapted evidence based therapeutic interventions to address common mental health disorders.
Undertake comprehensive holistic assessments for clients experiencing mental health, AOD, psychosocial and physical concerns related to mental illness.
Undertake initial and ongoing risk assessments and develop risk management plans, including provision of quick response interventions under the Stepped-Care model.
Develop a coordinated approach for the prevention, assessment, early intervention, referral and shared care arrangements for clients and carers experiencing signs and symptoms of mental illness.
Use expert professional clinical knowledge and experience to lead the coordination and integration of a diverse range of programs and strategies
What you need to be successful
An understanding of commitment to Aboriginal Community Control and self-determination
Demonstrated knowledge of current issues, standards and trends in the delivery of mental health and social and emotional well-being services to Aboriginal people.
Experience in developing/culturally adapting, evidence based SEWB and mental health services for Aboriginal people at a regional level.
Current Ochre Card (Working with Children’s Check NT) and Drivers License
Registered Nurse or Aboriginal Health Practitioner with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
Post graduate qualification in Mental Health +/- Certificate IV or equivalent qualification in AOD
Minimum of 2 years’ experience in Indigenous mental health and ******* and other drug service provision.
