Hospital Affiliation: Unity Health Toronto - St. Michael's
Campus: St. George (Downtown Toronto)

Description:

The multidisciplinary Neurovascular (NV) Practice and the Department of Medical Imaging at St. Michael’s Hospital (SMH) and the University of Toronto are recruiting a full-time, academic hybrid radiologist with fellowship training in Interventional Neuroradiology (Neurovascular procedures) and Diagnostic Neuroradiology. The academic position description will be assigned based on the candidate’s teaching or research strengths and the successful candidate must be eligible for a full-time clinical academic appointment at the rank of Assistant/Associate/Full Professor. The anticipated start date is January 1, 2026 or earlier if possible.

SMH is a member of the Unity Health Toronto network and is a busy, 463-bed quaternary care academic centre, and one of four principal teaching hospitals of the University of Toronto. Within the University of Toronto, the NV Practice and the Department of Medical Imaging have distinguished themselves with recognized excellence in undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate teaching, as well as research. The successful candidate will join a collegial group that supports our mission of excellent patient care delivered in a positive and constructive work environment, and the opportunity for a close collaborative working and teaching relationship with Neurology, Neurosurgery, Critical Care, Emergency Medicine, and the Trauma program.

The role offers excellent compensation and opportunities for professional and career growth. This is the ideal role for a self-starter and a team player, and will offer the opportunity to perform all types of NV procedures, and interpret all types of diagnostic neuroradiology studies (X-ray, CT and MRI, lumbar puncture, myelography and angiography). The position includes a significant opportunity for advancement in clinical leadership and research, both in the NV Practice and in the Department of Medical Imaging.

The successful applicant must hold an MD degree, or equivalent and will have completed residency training in Diagnostic Radiology and fellowship training in both Diagnostic and Interventional Neuroradiology. Preference will be given to candidates who have completed a two-year RCPSC accredited fellowship or international equivalent with the expectation of successful completion of subspecialty exams if eligible. They must be eligible for medical licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Ontario. Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with the candidate's qualifications and experience.

The estimated income range will be $400,000 to $600,000 per annum for a full-time equivalent, with opportunity for increased salary commensurate with experience and academic credentials.

Qualified candidates should send a cover letter, CV, and list of 3 potential references jointly to Dr. Anish Kirpalani, Chief, Department of Medical Imaging, and Dr. Vitor Mendes Pereira, Schroeder Chair in Advanced Neurovascular Interventions and Head of the Neurovascular Program, to: . Review of applications will begin immediately. The position will remain open until filled or recruitment is closed.

The NV Practice consists of 4 physicians from 3 different specialties (2 from Neurosurgery, 1 from Medical Imaging, and 1 from Neurology) who are appointed to both the NV Practice for neurovascular interventional procedures & endovascular neurosurgery, and their base specialty practices for work performed in their base specialty.

The Neuroradiology Division of the Medical Imaging Practice encompasses busy CT and MRI services supporting a strong referral base in neuro-oncology, neurology, neurovascular, spine, skull base, and general neurosurgery as well as community outpatient services. The group is heavily involved in clinical activity, teaching and research. We participate fully in the University of Toronto academic programs and train medical students, residents and several full-time University of Toronto Neuroradiology fellows each year. The Department of Medical Imaging currently has 3 multi-detector CT scanners, and 4 MRI scanners (two 1.5T and two 3.0 T) plus a portable ultra-low field 0.064T head MRI scanner, the first clinical implementation of this technology in Canada. A new PET-CT scanner was installed in 2024. CT and MRI new scanners and significant upgrades are underway.

The resources available for members of the NV Practice include a Philips biplane flat panel dedicated neurointervention suite, and a Siemens Artis Icono in the operating rooms (termed OR-X). SMH is a high-volume referral center for the endovascular management of complex neurovascular conditions and performs the full gamut of NV procedures. We perform large volumes of endovascular aneurysm repairs and carotid stenting procedures annually. SMH is a designated Comprehensive Stroke Center and an accredited ACS Level I Trauma hospital. We routinely treat acute large vessel ischemic stroke, brain and spinal cord dural arteriovenous fistulae/arteriovenous malformations, and epistaxis. We perform spine pre-operative embolization and percutaneous procedures (pain, vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty). We have a burgeoning practice dealing with venous disease processes in the brain and evolving techniques for intracranial hypotension and Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH). We have excellent access to anesthesia. Our clinical services are supported by dedicated nurses and clerical staff.

The RADIS (Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, Dynamic Flow, Imaging, & Simulation) LAB is a research lab dedicated for NV procedural work, initiated by SMH’s Director of Endovascular Research and Innovation and Schroeder Chair in Advanced Neurovascular Interventions.

Recently, significant new resources have been added in support of the Department of Medical Imaging’s internationally recognized research work through a Research Chair in Medical Imaging Artificial Intelligence. The hospital houses the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute and the Keenan Research Centre which provide world-class support and opportunities for radiologists to engage in collaborative translational research.
