Music Librarian

Location: London, Ontario

Category: Education Jobs

About Radio Western:

Radio Western is a radio station located on the campus of Western University in London, Ontario. Our programming is almost entirely created by volunteers—both students and members of the London community—and features a wide variety of music and talk shows. We are committed to providing a platform for members of the London community while also teaching valuable, hands-on experience for students in the fields of audio production, marketing, and radio broadcasting.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

Radio Western contains a large, historic collection of CDs and vinyl records which includes music from London, ON and around the world. The Music Librarian will be responsible for archiving these vast music collections while documenting their contents in our existing databases. This position will be responsible for the numerical and alphabetical filing of CDs and vinyl records, respectively. They will follow additional archival guidelines provided by the Station Manager to categorize vinyl records based on genre. This position will be responsible for updating the library databases with the required metadata for CDs and vinyl records which have yet to be documented. This will help volunteers curate their music set with ease and allow for frequent use of both libraries, all while preserving archives that are of vital importance to London's musical history. As the station seeks to update the current CD library by removing excess shelving units, the station has begun to store CDs in plastic sleeves rather than plastic cases which have created additional shelving space. This means that this position will update existing CDs with this filing method while ensuring accuracy in labelling. This additional space will allow for more space to help foster the community for people visiting, volunteering, and working at the station. Additionally, this participant will teach and delegate tasks to any volunteers as needed.

Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

Archive and organize Radio Western's extensive collection of CDs and vinyl records, ensuring the preservation of both local and global music history.

Implement numerical and alphabetical filing systems for CDs and vinyl records, respectively.

Follow archival guidelines provided by the Station Manager to categorize vinyl records based on genre.

Document the contents of the music collections in existing databases, updating them with the necessary metadata.

Facilitate the transition of the CD library by updating existing CDs with plastic sleeves instead of cases, ensuring accurate labelling.

Collaborate with volunteers, providing them with organized and easily accessible music sets through detailed database entries.

Teach and delegate tasks to volunteers as necessary, ensuring a collaborative and efficient archiving process.
