About the Role

This is an exciting rare opportunity to advance your nursing career and embark on a Nurse Practitioner pathway in Radiation Oncology.

A newly established two-year Nurse Practitioner Candidate programme resulting in a confirmed full-time Nurse Practitioner role is now available commencing in January 2026.

Year one will provide the candidate with the opportunity to gain and expand speciality knowledge and clinical experience within the Radiation Oncology arena, working alongside the Radiation Oncology clinical teams and participating in the RANZCR Radiation Oncology Training Program. You will have the opportunity to continue with your post graduate master - s degree education if required.

Year two will involve the completion of the Nurse Practitioner Training Programme (NPTP) which includes the final academic year in preparation for Nurse Practitioner registration. On the completion of this programme, the candidate would be expected to proceed to New Zealand Nursing Council for panel assessment and Nurse Practitioner registration. This year incudes protected clinical and non-clinical time for mentorship and consolidation of clinical skills, diagnostic reasoning, critical analysis and clinical prescribing.

Key responsibilities:

Undertaking First Specialist Appointments under supervision for patients and whanau with a cancer diagnosis within an identified patient group
Conducting on treatment review clinics under supervision for patients undergoing radiotherapy, facilitating assessment and management of treatment related side effects
Assessment and management of patient - s presenting for radiotherapy acutely unwell from their cancer diagnosis or treatment related toxicities under supervision
Assessment of out-of-town patients who present for radiotherapy with exacerbation of pre-existing medical conditions
Follow-up clinic under supervision for patients post radiotherapy treatment with referral to appropriate services
Supporting radiation oncology multi-disciplinary team including nursing, radiation therapists, radiation oncologists, registrars and allied health team members.
About the Service

The radiation oncology department is part of the Canterbury regional cancer and haematology service at Christchurch Hospital based on the lower ground floor.

Your support and empathy accompanied with your excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build effective relationships with a strong patient focus will see you succeed in this exciting opportunity.

Experience working in oncology or with cancer patients, within an acute setting is essential
Promote nursing research, education and evidence-based practice
Motivated, organised, exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to engage a wide range of people
Hold a relevant post graduate qualification
Registered with the Nursing Council of New Zealand with a current Annual Practising Certificate (APC)
