Description

The Head Start Bus Driver transports children, parents and staff for the program. The Driver works as part of the site team to provide support in all aspects of the Head Start program.

Candidates must submit applications by 11/03/23 to be considered for first-round interviews.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education and/or Experience High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED). Extensive experience in school bus driving may substitute for education requirements. *Early Childhood Education experience preferred.

CERTIFICATES and LICENSES
• Valid driver's license, insured vehicle for use on the job, and satisfactory driving record for the previous three years.
• Registration with the Central Background Registry of the Child Care Division.
• Oregon School Bus Driver's Certificate or ability to obtain.
• Current Medical Examiner's Certificate Card or ability to obtain.
• First Aid/CPR Certification or ability to obtain.
• Possess or ability to obtain within 30 days, a current, valid Class 'B' Commercial Driver's License (CDL) permit with:
• School Bus driver license endorsement ('S' Endorsement).
• Passenger driver license endorsement ('P' Endorsement).
• Successfully pass the DMV Air Brakes Knowledge test.

Communication Skills

Bilingual English-Spanish capabilities are preferred but not required. To qualify as bilingual, staff must possess demonstrated abilities to speak, write, and read fluently in Spanish and English and pass a bilingual test. *Bilingual staff may receive a pay differential based on HS Program language needs.
• ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive.
• Transports passengers on program-related activities by the most direct route, safely, and efficiently.
• Develop and maintain the quickest and safest bus route.
• Keeps assigned vehicle clean and equipped for emergencies. Reports any malfunctions.
• Complete pre-trip inspection of bus.
• Monitors own licensing and training requirements and ensures that current and legal bus driving requirements are maintained at all times. This includes at least 8-hours per year for special training.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential duties and responsibilities.
• Required to frequently be able to reach and grip steering wheel; regularly required to climb or balance; occasionally required to stand; walk; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl to visually inspect bus.
• Regularly lift and/or move 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, ability to adjust focus and depth perception. Ability to be alert at all times while performing job.
• Physical ability to quickly evacuate children from the school bus in an emergency.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
• Driving and vehicle inspections in all weather conditions.
• Securing and transporting young children with varying abilities.
• Moderate to frequent loud noises.
• Multiple distractions from traffic, parents, bus riders and the public.
