Position Overview

The Forest School Educator will support the Wild Child Coordinator in delivering and administering programming and events in Edmonton and surrounding areas. The successful applicant will set up outdoor learning sites, lead educational activities focused on ecology and conservation, and create engaging experiences rooted in outdoor experiential learning.

Additional responsibilities include contributing to our social media platforms, writing session notes, and guiding children and their caregivers through safe and exciting nature excursions.

About this Position

This is a Canada Summer Job Position, so you must meet these criteria to be eligible for this position:

Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment.
Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act2; and, be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

Tasks and Responsibilities

The Wild Child Educator will be responsible for helping our Wild Child Coordinator to deliver and administer Sierra Club's Edmonton & Area Wild Child programs and events. The successful applicant will setup forest school sites, educate participants on local environments including conservation, ecology, and the impacts of human activities and develop a variety of outdoor activities to enhance outdoor, experiential learning experiences. The Wild Child Educator will also contribute to social media platforms, website, blogs, Facebook, and Instagram postings. Applicants must be able to provide a clean Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Screen and a clear Child Abuse Registry Search.

Tasks will include:

Support delivery of Wild Child Forest School programming in Edmonton
Set up and take down Forest School sites, including carrying heavy equipment
Assess and manage risks to ensure participant safety
Foster curiosity, creativity, and connection with nature
Develop and lead engaging activities focused on ecology, conservation, and the local environment
Collaborate with caregivers to support each child's success and address concerns in a positive, respectful manner
Guide participants of all ages during nature excursions and outdoor sessions
Maintain clear session notes and contribute to social media (Instagram, Facebook, blog, website)
Build and maintain relationships with community partners

Qualifications:

Post-secondary training in one of the following areas: Early Childhood Education, Environmental Studies, Ecology, Biology, Taxonomy, Environmental or Municipal Planning, Geography, Education, Public relations, Media / Journalism Studies

Post-secondary training in: Early Childhood Education, Environmental Studies, Ecology, Biology, Education, Geography, Planning, Journalism, or related fields
Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
Strong organizational and time management skills
Comfortable working with volunteers
Ability to travel to and from various work sites
Current First Aid certification (CPR-C with AED) is an asset
Must love being in nature and working with children!
Must be between 17–30 years of age to qualify under the Canada Summer Jobs Program
Successful applicants will require a clean Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening

Remuneration

This is a full-time position: 35 hours per week for 8 weeks
Start date: July 7th
Training dates: June 12, 13, 14th
Pay rate: $15-$20hour (depending on experience)
Number of positions: 3

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $15.00-$20.00 per hour

Expected hours: 35 per week

Schedule:

8 hour shift
Monday to Friday
Weekends as needed

Work Location: In person
