Position Overview
The Paint Workshop Supervisor – Industrial Painting & Protective Coatings is a senior operational role responsible for the day‑to‑day supervision, coordination, and quality management of industrial painting and coating activities undertaken in the workshop and on site. The role provides technical leadership, workforce supervision, quality assurance oversight, and operational coordination to ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and in accordance with contractual, regulatory, and industry standards.
This position operates at a supervisory/managerial level, combining advanced technical expertise with responsibility for people management, quality systems, and operational performance.
Key ResponsibilitiesOperational & Workforce Management
Supervise, coordinate, and direct a team of industrial painters and surface preparation staff across workshop and site‑based projects.
Allocate labour and resources to meet production schedules and project requirements.
Provide technical guidance and oversight to ensure work is completed to specification and industry standards.
Monitor productivity, workmanship quality, and adherence to approved procedures.
Quality Assurance & Compliance
Oversee and implement quality assurance processes for industrial coating works, including inspection and verification of surface preparation and coating application.
Conduct and review quality checks using specialist equipment such as dry film thickness gauges, wet film gauges, dew point meters, and other inspection tools.
Maintain accurate QA documentation, inspection records, and compliance reports.
Assist in the development, improvement, and implementation of QA systems, procedures, and documentation.
Project & Cost Oversight
Assist management with job costings, project reviews, and post‑completion evaluations.
Monitor material usage, labour efficiency, and rework to support cost control and continuous improvement.
Liaise with project managers, site representatives, and clients to ensure scope, quality, and delivery expectations are met.
Health, Safety & Environmental Management
Ensure all painting and coating activities comply with company Health & Safety, Environmental, and Quality Management Systems.
Lead toolbox meetings, hazard identification, and safety briefings.
Ensure staff are trained in and comply with safe work procedures, PPE requirements, and environmental controls.
Promote a proactive safety culture within the workshop and on site.
Equipment & Facility Oversight
Oversee the operation, maintenance, and cleanliness of paint booths, spray equipment, tools, and associated machinery.
Ensure equipment is serviceable, calibrated where required, and fit for purpose.
Coordinate maintenance requirements to minimise downtime and safety risks.
Skills, Qualifications & Experience
Minimum 2 years’ experience in industrial painting and protective coating operations, including leadership or supervisory responsibilities.
Demonstrated experience supervising teams in a workshop and/or construction or industrial site environment.
Strong understanding of industrial coating systems, surface preparation standards, and inspection methodologies.
NACE CIP Level 2 (or equivalent inspection/quality certification) preferred.
Proven ability to manage quality assurance processes and documentation.
Experience contributing to job costings, operational reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Strong communication, organisational, and leadership skills.
Solid commitment to Health & Safety and environmental compliance.
Full New Zealand driver licence; F endorsement preferred.
Remuneration & Hours
Hourly rate: $43.00 – $48.00 per hour, depending on qualifications, skills, and experience.
Permanent, full‑time position: minimum 30 hours per week.
