Norway House is a cultural center that connects contemporary Norway and the United States through arts, business, and culture. Between hosting our own events and renting out space for private events, we are looking to hire more qualified event staff.
Depending on the event, the hiree will act as either Event Captain, Front Desk Attendee, or Bartender—the following is the job description for all of these roles.
The Event Captain is responsible for supervising staff and overseeing the operations of an event. They liaise between the catering/bar staff and the client. While tasks vary based on the event, here are some responsibilities:
• Assist management and personnel in setting up logistics, including furniture, for the event
• Obtain basic knowledge of the AV system and prepare the system before the event; stay available to help resolve any minor technical difficulties during the event
• Provide excellent customer service to the client
• Greet clients upon arrival, and review agenda and needs for the event with the day-of coordinator assigned by the client
• Welcome guests and direct them to the event space
• Communicate and assist the Catering and Bar Team throughout the event
• Address onsite customer concerns and complaints appropriately
• Observe guests and fulfill additional requests
• Assist with cleanup at the end of the event
• In the event of a quick turnover between events in the same space, the Event Captain and other personnel have to assist with changing furniture configurations after the current event
• Shut down the venue at the end of the night, ensuring that no person is left behind and locking all doors, do a walk-through of the building
The Front Desk Attendee responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Greet and welcome guests and direct them to the event space
• Provide excellent customer service to the client
• Handle ticketing and ticket sales
• Answer phone calls, give directions and information
• Make and print signage when needed
• Unlock/lock doors, shut down the venue, and do a walk-through at the end of the night
The Bartender for events that require alcoholic/non-alcoholic drinks and concessions service:
• Beer and wine (no liquor/mixed drink license)
• Set up and prepare the bar before the event, stock inventory, and prepare snacks or food for sale at the bar
• Prepare alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages for guests
• Interact with customers, taking orders and serving snacks and drinks
• Check customer IDs to confirm legal drinking age
• Comply with food and beverage safety regulations
• Help clear the bar at the night's end, move furniture back in place, clean any apparent spills, take out trash and recycling
Schedules are flexible with particular needs for weekends and evenings
Must be able to lift up to 15lbs
